Leuphana University of Luneburg was originally founded as a teacher-training college and later granted the official university status in 1989. In 2005, it merged with the University of Applied Sciences North-East Lower Saxony. The university is the founder of the first public college in Germany.

One major objective of Leuphana University is to focus on sustainability and create a sustainable campus. It is declared as family friendly and awarded a certification from the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. The university has been climate neutral since 2014. It is labeled as a Fairtrade University and shortlisted for the German Sustainability Award.

Leuphana University co-operates with a number of universities worldwide for a number of purposes, such as integrated study-abroad programs, promotion of international research, and development of strategic partnerships.

Leuphana University Campus

The Central Building of Leuphana University offers space for teaching, research, student activities, and academic and cultural exchange. One special attraction of the building is the Libeskind auditorium with around 1100 sitting arrangements.

Leuphana University Residence

There is an option for both short-term and long-term stay. Leuphana University’s accommodation service helps students to find suitable accommodation. There are student dorms as well as private flats available. Both student dorms and private flats are often arranged on share-basis.

  • Studentenwerk OstNiedersachsen

This offers students with unfurnished rooms on a flat-share basis in seven student dorms located near the main campus or city center.

  • Campus Wohnen

There are six student dorms near the main campus. Students can get unfurnished rooms in flat shares. Students need to create an account, get known with other flatmates, and finally send an application to be accepted by the tenants only.

Leuphana University Admission Process

  • Application: Applications are submitted online. However, doctoral admission forms are submitted offline only.
  • Admission Deadlines:
  1. Bachelor programs- admission tests and interviews are held.
  2. For the winter term, it will take place from 6th August- 14th August.
  3. Master programs- 1st April-1st June
  4. Master degree programs in teaching- 15th June-15th August
  5. Doctoral programs: applications can be submitted at any time.
  • General Requirements: university entrance qualification, school leaving certificate.

There is a wide range of available scholarships-

  • The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)- This offers a number of scholarships for academics, international students, and scientists/researchers studying in Germany.
  • Germany Scholarship- This scholarship supports high-performing students for over two semesters with a monthly sum of 300 Euros.
  • Heinrich Boll Scholarships for International Students- For Master/PhD programs. Deadline- 1st March (annual). 
  • MAWISTA- This grant of 500 Euros/month is provided to students studying abroad with a child for a period of 12 months. Deadline- 15th January (annual).
