What is M.Phil. Zoology course about?

Master of Philosophy in Zoology is a research oriented program intended to provide the candidate with the proper tools to build up their own research in zoology. Zoology is a branch of biology that deals with the study of animal kingdom.

M.Phil. Zoology Eligibility

Candidate applying must have successfully completed a Master of Science in Zoology with minimum of 55% aggregate score. Other than the mentioned criterion candidate can also apply if he/she has scored 55% aggregate score in an exam that is considered equivalent. Aside from the M.Sc. score some of the colleges conduct their entrance examination and a personal interview.

M.Phil. Zoology Admission Process

Each college has a different criterion for admission in the M.Phil. Zoology course. Few of the colleges conduct their own entrance examination. Information about the few of them is given below:

Berhampur University, Odisha  

Admission into all M. Phil courses is done by an entrance test followed by an interview. The Test comprises of one paper of 100 marks (50 marks Objective Type Questions and 50 marks for short-answer type questions) of two hours duration. The Question Paper covers all the papers taught at the Post-Graduate level of the concerned subject.

The candidates should secure minimum 50% of marks in the entrance test in order to be eligible for the interview. The selection for admission into M. Phil. Courses is made on the basis of the career marks and the marks secured in the interview, as detailed below:

Panjab University, Chhattisgarh

Candidates who wish to pursue M.Phil. as well as Ph.D. in any subject at the Panjab University must appear for the Panjab University Ph.D. Entrance Test. The Test shall consist of 2 papers in each subject as detailed below: -

Candidates can apply for these examinations through online as well as offline process. Application forms can be obtained through respective websites of colleges.

Direct admission

Direct admission through management quota is also available in a few of the private colleges, though most of the colleges have a strict selection criterion.  Government engineering colleges do not provide direct admission since management quota is not available.

Duration

Generally, any Master of Philosophy course has minimum duration of one year. Most of the institute provide the program duration of one year for M.Phil.  zoology. Some of the institutes provide also two year program. The duration varies from college to college.

Distance Learning

Kalyani University Distance Education and OPJS University provide a distance learning program for Master of Philosophy in Zoology course. Eligibility for candidates to get admission in this two year program is M.Sc. in Zoology subject. Average fee for the course is approximately INR 25,000.

M.Phil Zoology Career Prospects and Salary

Master of Philosophy in Zoology gives candidates an opportunity to research and work as a zoologist. Employment opportunities for zoologists are available in various industries such as Zoos, Wildlife Services, Botanical Gardens, Conservation organizations, National parks, Nature reserves, Universities, laboratories etc.

Even though the main purpose of this degree is to be a prerequisite for the Ph.D. degree, candidates can also opt for other opportunities.

Zoo Curators  A curator oversees the zoo’s entire animal collection, manages the facility’s staff members, and completes various administrative tasks. An animal curator oversees one specific group of animals in a zoo’s animal collection, such as reptiles or mammals. They also have to make decisions involving animal husbandry, diets, veterinary care, quarantine procedures, enrichment activities, animal transportation, and research projects.
Animal Behaviorists and Rehabilitators  Animal behaviorists train the employees of zoos and museums on how to interact and care for animals. They generally focus on the behaviors of animals in their natural habitats (ethology). They take care of ill, injured or orphaned wild animals which have been injured by bushfires, oil spills, or other major disasters. After the animals regain their healthy conditions, the rehabilitators release them back in the wild.
Conservationist  Zoologists are also employed by wildlife conservation agencies as Wildlife Conservationists where major responsibility is to conserve the extinct species of wildlife and animals. As a conservationist, their job is mainly based on the conservation of wild animals and their habitats.
Teachers and Researchers  After completing M.Phil. in Zoology, one can teach in schools and colleges. Researchers can conduct research in private organizations or in university departments. The zoologist conduct research about a number of topics related to a particular animal species. Upon completion of the research, they can continue as an independent researcher or work as a professor in colleges or universities. They can also join as project leaders or research directors and lead other budding zoologists in research projects.
