There are more than 130 million hematology tests and 500 million biochemistry tests conducted every year in pathologies. There are currently 4500 pathologists who have completed MD pathology from reputed MD colleges in India and are a part of Indian Association of Pathologist and Microbiologists.

According to the Intersociety Council for Pathology Information, Inc., nearly 18,000 pathologists are actively practising in the United States.

The average retirement age is 71 years old. Pathologist strength will fall to 14,800 by 2030 based on the current number of pathology residents-in-training.

Pathologists will be in short supply over the next two decades, beginning in 2015. The number of retiring pathologists will begin to rise in 2014, reaching a peak by 2023.

The number of pathology residents graduating each year will be less than the number of pathologists retiring each year. Population growth and disease incidence increases are expected to result in a net deficit of more than 5,700 pathologists by 2030.
