According to one of my cousin’s personal experiences, Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding is a very innovative course that a student can pursue, therefore get a chance to explore many different things.

If you are interested in pursuing DoST CUSAT, then there are ample opportunities that you can get. Not only in terms of education but the college provides an excellent placement to all the students. But at the same time, you should be aware enough to grab the opportunities and work very hard to achieve the targeted career opportunities.

There is a group of well-qualified faculty members who prepare you for all your future endeavors so that you can make the best out of yourself. Not only academics but they give you hands-on experience to the particular that is very helpful for you during your placement interviews.

The placements are quite decent in which many prestigious companies across the country as well as from many other countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and various other countries participate. But due to the oil crisis, the placements were a little dull during the past one to two years. If we look at the overall placements they are good.

Number of students placed 21
Highest CTC offered INR 24 LPA
Average CTC offered INR 10 LPA

Therefore, we can conclude that the placement opportunities for Naval Architecture and shipbuilding are very attractive to opt for.

I have a few friends at CUSAT, according to them, the Marine Engineering program offered by CUSAT is quite good. However, the number of boys in the branch is more. As girls mostly refrain from joining Marine Engineering.

Being said that, the placement statistics for the branch are quite good. Here is a brief highlight of 2020 placement for the branch.

Average CTC

3 LPA

Highest CTC

5 LPA

Top Recruiters

MOL, Fleet, Synergy

Job Roles

Marine Engineer

Compared to other BTech branches the Marine Engineering branch enjoys less freedom. The department is 1 km away from the BTech college of CUSAT and the rules are a bit strict too.

Naval architecture and ocean engineering at IIT Madras is a multifaceted discipline with a perfect blend of principles of naval architecture, ocean engineering, and mechanical engineering that teach you to design, develop, and maintain ships, boats, and other marine structures and systems.

A plethora of topics are covered under its curriculum some major topics being

  • Ship design and hydrodynamics
  • Marine propulsion and power systems
  • Marine structures and materials
  • Coastal and offshore engineering
  • Ocean engineering and technology
  • Marine environmental engineering.

This program offers internship opportunities in shipyards, offshore structures, and Shipping societies. Some points about the job prospects of Naval and Ocean Engineering are

  • The theory is much more intriguing and exciting than the real-life work experience
  • Beginners in this field have limited job prospects
  • Most desirable profiles are still not open in India
  • The job locations are limited owing to the nature of the field
  • Unfortunately, the pay scale is much lower than expected as the jobs in this field focus a lot on experience and beginners struggle a lot in the beginning.
  • Another option is pursuing MS or Ph.D. in the field to broaden your knowledge
  • You can enter Academia and apply as a faculty member in a prestigious Institute. Here, you can continue to conduct your research and work on consultancy projects to pursue your interest in the subject and meet your financial goals.

All in all, the scope of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from IIT Madras is quite broad, covering many topics from design, analysis, and testing of ships, boats, and offshore platforms to marine environmental engineering and hands-on experience.

The Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering branch at IIT Madras offers courses over 3 levels

B.Tech level: This level offers the maximum job prospects one could ask for.

  • The placements of BTech students of this branch are excellent although core offers are only a handful. This allows students to switch fields and enter banking, finance, or consultancy.
  • Some students go for MBAs or start preparing for government exams.
  • Those interested in Hughes studies go for a master's or a Ph.D. usually in top foreign institutes.

Masters level: The job prospects are similar to the bachelor's level but most students prefer going for a Ph.D. or a job

  • The placement scenario is identical to BTech placements except that Masters students can also make it into companies that need mechanical or civil background. This is mainly because of their prior knowledge of mechanical or civil branches from the bachelor's degree.
  • Most MTech students go to a job profile that aligns with their bachelor's domain
  • Masters students are more skilled and experienced and thus are offered more core jobs in comparison to BTechbstudents
  • For those interested in higher studies, the option for Ph.D. from a top foreign university is open. Some even convert their Master's into Ph.D. at IIT Madras.
  • Other than Civil and Mechanical companies, Masters's students are offered a plethora of non-core jobs with excellent packages.

Ph.D. level: This is the ultimate level and has very few job prospects

  • No placements are offered to Ph.D. students and most of them enter Academia and become professors in top colleges
  • Those who are hungry for research, continue their passion by becoming Postdocs
  • A very few are inclined towards startups based on their research work and open one of their or join someone else’s

No matter which level you belong to, the students of Naval get to experience the excellent campus life of IIT Madras and get equal exposure to extracurricular activities. The branch may provide limited core opportunities but remember IIT Madras attracts the best non-core jobs and someone open to challenges takes it from a positive perspective.

Indian Maritime University offers fewer placement opportunities compared to private universities. It’s because Govt. colleges don’t pay placement fees to companies to hire students. However, If you want to join Govt. Sector, an IMU degree can help. Also, the Govt. has taken shipping as a challenge to boost our economy, so you can expect to get new job opportunities in the field.

Career change options are limited for Marine Engineers. As a Marine Engineer, you can’t fit into other professions and the opposite is also true. You need to be a 2nd engineer or a Chief to stop going to sea and start a career on shore. You can get some career options by doing an MBA. Various universities offer PG Diploma in Marine Engineering. Marine Engineering students can appear in GATE as well, but the questions asked in the examination are from Mechanical Engineering.

It cannot be said yes or no for this question as it depends upon you how much you are interested in this field. While entering college you need to have an interest in the maritime field. This means that you should know about this field, growth, career, etc. You also need to have an interest in design, food production, and technology. Since this stream is very rarely taken by students, it is very costly. For choosing such a stream you should first assure yourself that you are financially sound.

The various benefit of perusing naval architecture from AMET University is as follows:

  • As this is a totally different field you will stand out among the crowd in the society and you may get a job as lesser people take this stream.
  • If you try jobs abroad you may get good opportunities abroad with higher packages.
  • You will also be getting challenging projects which will help you in your career.

The various types of limitations of perusing this type of course are:

  • You may get less opportunity in India. As a fresher, you may not get good jobs with good salaries.
  • Since you will find difficulty in getting jobs your career growth will get hampered.
  • This field requires more innovation which can be sometimes difficult for you.
  • Since after investing a huge amount of money in this course there is no guarantee that you will get a good job with handsome salary, so there is a lesser return on investment.

Now the final decision is yours. So, choose wisely.
