Course Description

Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Civil Engineering is an undergraduate engineering degree of four year duration. 10+2 pass students with science subjects are eligible to take admission in this course. Admission in most of the colleges offering Civil Engineering is done though any of the entrance tests conducted at national and state level.

Average tuition fee for this course ranges between 2 to 4 lakhs in most of the public institutes and 3 to 6 lakhs in private colleges. However there are some government colleges which offer this course at very less tuition fee.

Civil Engineering is not that much popular course of choice due to the software and electronics boom of the past two decades, which has pushed this field into the sidelines. But, with India’s growing economy and lagging infrastructure, it is becoming increasingly evident that India needs skilled, qualified and bright civil engineers like never before. Civil engineer can get placed in various public and private sector industries with a healthy remuneration. Average entry level salary package for a Civil engineer in his core job sector may range between 3 to 5 lakh per annum. 

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines in the world. Civil engineering, until a few decades back, was a much sought after course among Indian students, but lately has been sidelined due to the software and IT boom. However with the increasing need to develop and maintain India’s infrastructure, which is lagging in all aspects, this field is bouncing back strongly.

Before you decide to pursue your undergraduate studies in this field, it is important to understand that Civil engineering is not just about buildings and bridges. If you are under the assumption that all that civil engineers do is wear a yellow helmet and supervise workers in construction sites, then you are yet to understand the true capacity of this field. Academic Options after B.Tech. Civil Engineering

There are options for higher studies after the completion of B.Tech. course. Students can pursue Master’s degree in specialized course. Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Civil engineering and other allied branches like-

  • Structural Engineering
  • Architectural Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering etc.

It is the best option to get specialized in this course. Students can take GATE for taking admission in this course offered by many top engineering colleges in India. Ph.D. is another option for higher studies. Students can also opt for MBA course, which will take them to the managerial level in their career which is most promising career option nowadays. 

Admission Criteria

Candidates seeking admission to the B. Tech. Programmes are required to appear in the JEE (Main) to be conducted by CBSE, New Delhi. All Admission shall be based on JEE (Main) all India Ranking.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidate must have 10+2 pass with at least 50% marks (45% for SC/ ST) in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and pass marks in English and qualifying in AIEEE.

Admission Guidelines

60% of available B. Tech. seats are reserved for the permanent residents of NE States. Candidates who fill-up Tezpur University application form shall be considered for the reserved seats. The applicants desiring a seat under NE quota must upload a PRC (Permanent Residence Certificate issued by the competent authority of any of the North Eastern states) along with the form. However, these applicants may also be eligible to get admitted to the open seats through central counselling procedure.

Admission to the remaining 40% open seats shall be made through the central counselling i.e. Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) based on JEE (Main)

Also direct admission facility is available to State Rank Holders of (10+2) Science Examinations of NE States and securing above 80% in aggregate. 

The prospectus and form for applying for B. Tech. Programme is normally available from the Month of February to April every year and either can be downloaded from the University website or can be directly obtained from deignated stations as notified in the University website.

Course Details

NOTE: Candidates of the following programmes will be required to pay an additional fee of Rs.1200/- per semester on account of consumables:

  • B. Tech. in Food Engineering and Technology
  • M. Tech. in Food Engineering and Technology
  • M. Tech. in Energy Technology
