Course Structure for MBA in Marketing

A regular MBA program is of two years with either two semesters or three semesters in each year. At the end of the completion of the first year, all students have to go through a summer training program or internship which is designed to give hands on experience to the students about how an organization functions. At the beginning of the second year students select their specialization. The typical process can be shown with the following flow chart:

Course Structure for MBA in Marketing

Almost all major B-Schools teach foundation courses in the first year and in the second year students opt from a list of electives. The courses in the first year span a wide variety of area of study. Some of these are:

Area

Course

Marketing

Economics

Managerial Economics, Firms and Markets etc.

Finance

Financial Accounting, Financial Reporting and Analysis etc.

Organizational Behavior

What are the Electives for MBA in Marketing?

At the beginning of the second year, a student has to select from an array of electives offered by their B-School. These electives cover a wide range of areas related to marketing. In the last few years with the advent of digital markets, digital marketing has also been added as one of the electives. The name of the electives may vary from institute to institute but can be broadly classified as follows:

  • Marketing Research
  • Consumer Behavior
  • Marketing Strategy
  • Marketing Services
  • Product and Service Design
  • Brand Management
  • Digital and Social Media Marketing
  • Analysis of Demand
  • Marketing Campaigns

Course Delivery Structure

All major Management Institutes follow a similar course delivery structure. Method of education includes Lectures, Classroom Discussions, Individual and Group Projects, Paper Submissions, Case Studies, Quizzes, Internships – Industrial and NGO etc.

Which is better – MBA in Marketing or MBA in Finance?

This is a question often asked by MBA aspirants since both Marketing and Finance have stronghold when it comes to job opportunity. To pick the best one out of MBA in Finance and MBA in Marketing is difficult. While Finance is important to sustain a company, Marketing is the main support system of a company.

The best approach is to go for the course which resonates with your interest. For example if you have excellent communication skills and are good with people then Marketing is the right choice for you.  MBA in Marketing involves travelling and is the right option for individuals with excellent people skills.

PGP Vs. PGDM

PGP stands for Post Graduate Program and is a full 2 year program offered at almost all B-Schools. PGDM is Post Graduate Diploma in Management and is just another name for PGP. There is no practical difference between a PGP course and PGDM course.

Further Academic Opportunities

MBA graduates looking for further study can always opt for a Fellow Program in Management (FPM) which is offered by all top management institutes in the country. It is a Doctoral program in Management and encourages young researchers to be innovative and hone their analytical thinking and problem solving skills.

Other than FPM Program an individual can also go for PhD in Management which is offered at Universities and IITs. An FPM program or PhD in Management paves way for a career in Research and/or Teaching. Average Salary for an Assistant Professor lies somewhere between 400,000 INR to 800,000 INR.

Both Thiagarajar School of Management and PSG Institute of Management are average-rated tier-2 institutes, none of them being up to the mark for an MBA.

The points below give a brief overview of the PSG Institute of Management, which has a sight better reputation than the other.

  • Placement in PSGIM is moderate. The average package offered to students in MBA is around 5 LPA, which is considered to be not so decent for MBA graduates.
  • For marketing, the placements are somewhat better. For students in finance, only two major companies, BNY Mellon and State Street visit the campus for placement in core finance jobs. So, most students in all branches of MBA go to sales profiles only.
  • The highest package offered in the institute to date is close to 9 LPA, which is not very high.
  • Academics in PSGIM are is moderate, which is nowhere close to that of IIMs and XLRI.
  • The course offered in the institute is not residential and so, there is less focus on summer internships and practical knowledge-based learning.

Both the institutes are not very good options for MBA degrees. But, PSG Institute of Management still manages to offer some decent jobs in Marketing and so it can be considered.

One of my friends is a TSM student pursuing his PGDM and is in his first year of college. The School of Management is one of the best and oldest business schools in South India. It is well-known in the south and has some popularity in northern India.

In comparison to other college’s hostels, the food is really good here. They have a diverse culture here. TSM celebrates almost all festivals with zeal, including Diwali, Onam, Dussehra, Pongal, and many others, so students feel at home.

Thiagarajar School of Management (TSM) is a well-known business school located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The school offers a range of postgraduate programs in management, including MBA, PGDM, and Executive PGDM.

Typically, the admission process for TSM and other B-Schools in India involves several steps, including:

  • Eligibility criteria: Candidates must fulfill the eligibility criteria for the program of their choice, which may include academic qualifications, work experience, entrance exam scores, and other factors.
  • Entrance exams: Candidates must appear for and qualify in one or more entrance exams, such as CAT, XAT, GMAT, CMAT, MAT, or TANCET, depending on the B-School and program of their choice.
  • Application process: Candidates must submit their application forms along with relevant documents, such as academic transcripts, entrance exam scores, work experience certificates, and other supporting documents.
  • Selection process: Shortlisted candidates will be called for further rounds of selection, which may include group discussion, personal interview, and/or written ability test.
  • Final admission: Candidates who successfully clear all rounds of selection will be offered admission to the program.

Regarding spot admission in TSM, it is unlikely that the school will offer spot admissions for its postgraduate programs in management. B-Schools typically follow a structured admission process, as described above, and do not offer spot admissions.

However, you can contact TSM's admission office or visit their official website to get more information about the admission process and any specific guidelines or instructions regarding admission. The hostels at the Thiagarajar School of Management are properly built and offer basic amenities to the students.

  • The rooms are Wi-Fi enabled. For 1st-year students, hostel rooms are either single/double/triple sharing. Only seniors get single occupancy on a first come first serve basis.
  • There is no air-conditioning which would make summers at the hostel a tad bit difficult. But the campus is filled with beautiful trees stretching over vast areas near the hostel. Students are encouraged to live in a natural atmosphere.
  • You will be made to share rooms to enable first-year students to smoothly build relations with their roommates through proper communication.
  • Laundry services are provided on a payment basis.

This should give you an idea about the hostels at Thiagarajar School of Management.
