Bose Institute, Kolkata is an autonomous research institution established in 1917, by Sir J.C Bose, the founder of modern science in Indian Subcontinent. Being Asia’s first research centre devoted to interdisciplinary research, the institute offers Ph.D. programs in various interdisciplinary specializations. Ph.D. Admissions

  • Candidates should have a valid award of JRF (CSIR-UGC-JRF/ DBT-JRF/ ICMR-JRF/ DST-INSPIRE/ DBT-BINC or equivalent).
  • The Minimum eligibility criteria for Ph.D. admissions is a Master’s degree in Engineering/ Science/ Technology in any branch of Science or Engineering.
  • The admission is offered on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the Personal Interview.
  • The Ph.D. admissions take place twice a year in January and July. Candidates need to apply online through the institute’s website. Given below is the details of the tentative timelines for Ph.D. admissions every year:

Integrated Ph.D. Admissions (M.Sc. – Ph.D.)

  • The candidates need to appear for the JGEEBILS examination conducted by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research or Joint Entrance Screening Test.
  • To be eligible for the admissions, applicants should have a minimum CGPA of 6 on a 10-point scale or 60% marks in overall percentage as well as in the major subject or percentage equivalent converted from CGPI /CPI in B. Sc. (Physics / Mathematics) / B.E. / B.Tech.
  • Candidates clearing the entrance examination will have to appear for a personal interview. Admission will be given to the candidates on the basis of their performance in the interview.
  • Candidates need to apply online by filling up the details and by paying an application fee of INR 1000.

Bose Institute Scholarships

The institute provides fellowship for the students pursuing Ph.D. and integrated Ph.D.

  • Until the first two years all the students pursuing integrated Ph.D. (M.Sc. – Ph.D.) will be getting a fellowship of INR 12,000 per month.
  • Fellowship during the Ph.D. period will be according to the rules and regulations of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.
  • The Ph.D. candidates can also apply for the “Prime Minister’s Fellowship for Doctoral Research” in www.prime minister fellowship scheme.in.

Ques. What is the procedure of getting into the Summer Training Programme for the outstanding students?

Ans. Students pursuing a Master's degree in any stream of physical/ biological /engineering /medical sciences can apply. Students pursuing Bachelors’ courses (e.g. B.Sc) may also apply if they are the recipients of INSPIRE, JBNSTS, KVPY, NTSE or similar prestigious awards. The institute will publish an advertisement where the link of the application will be given. The students need to apply online with a Letter of Recommendation. Selected candidates will be offered admission to the summer training program.

Ques. Does the Institute have a Wi-Fi facility?

Ans. Yes, the institute has a free Wi-Fi facility, the password of which will be given to each and every student after their admissions.

Ques. What is the cut off for JGEEBILS for an Integrated Ph.D course?

Ans. There is no cut off for JGEEBILS examination. Every year the expert panel internally decides an average cut off which is not shared with any of the candidates and students clearing the cut off are given a call for Personal Interview.

Ans. To be eligible for a JRF you have to clear NET(CSIR exams) , undergrads can however work as trainees which may be informal but are able to learn many things.
