IISERs are not established for just placement purposes rather the motto is to build the scientific aptitude among students so that they earn more from their skills and knowledge.

The curriculum at IISER has a strong base and you will eventually give up the idea of placements. This is why most students apply for Ph.D. after completing BS-MS from here. Ideally, you cannot compare IIT with IISER in terms of placements as most of the IT companies do not find IISERites to be worthful until they have acquired some skills of their own.

Do not apply here just for the sake of doing engineering as the level of competition is very high at IISER. You will be wasting 5 years if you do not want to pursue higher studies and looking just for placements.

Even if you look for job opportunities after BS-MS, you can take up jobs as biologists, chemists, mathematicians, physicists with a salary of around INR 50,000 per month.

IISc Bangalore is more than 110 years old and it is the first choice of most students for Science, Engineering, and Technology-related courses. Seven IISER were established recently with the goal of providing quality education in pure science. IISERs were established with the expectations that they would reach global standards in the field of basic sciences and offer intensive research like IISc.

IISERs offer courses such as BS-MS, integrated Ph.D., and Ph.D. to students. Although IISERs were established recently, they have good faculties and research facilities. Getting admission at IISc is more challenging compared to IISERs.

Preparation for the IISER Aptitude test will not ask for anything more than your preparation of Boards. The syllabus includes all that you studied in class 11 and 12 and for exams like JEE (mains and advanced), AIPMT, NEST. You need to keep some pointers in mind while you plan out your strategy of preparation.

  • Study Theory: You need to be very clear with all the basics in your syllabus. It is of no use to mug up all the high-level books like H C Verma and alike. Just stick to your NCERT books.
  • Once you are clear with the theory of the concepts from your NCERT books, you can look for other reference materials, notes from teachers to brush up on particular sub-topics that you need to be more sure of. You can also make your own notes since writing helps you remember things better and they can serve well in the end for revision purposes.
  • When it comes to Mathematics, you can never be prepared enough or solve just the right number of problems. So, make sure to practice as much as you can since that will help you find various techniques to come up with solutions and faster of course.

Hence, in general study and practice all the subjects- Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and be thorough. It is okay if you did not have either Maths or Biology- don't attempt the questions you are not sure of, that will lead to negative marking. You will need to get more than 35 questions correct out of 60 in order to secure a seat at the institute.

If you are considering pursuing science education in India, you might have come across two premier institutions - the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) and the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER). Here are some key differences between these institutions that you should know about:

Funding:

  • IISERs are funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), while NISER is funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).

Curriculum:

  • In IISERs, you will study all the subjects for two years before specializing in your area of interest for the remaining two years of your undergraduate program. In contrast, NISER has a one-year foundation program before students can specialize in their chosen field.
  • Both systems have their corresponding advantages and disadvantages, and you may prefer one system over the other based on your interests and goals.

Admission:

  • To get into NISER, you need to appear for the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST), which is exclusively for admission to NISER.
  • To get into IISERs, you can apply through multiple channels. You can qualify through Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), or state/central board exam marks. There are certain cut-offs that you can find out about on their respective websites.

While both IISERs and NISER are premier institutions for science education in India, they differ in their funding, curriculum, and admission processes. It is important to consider your interests and goals while making a decision about which institution to choose.

A few of my friends have taken the IISER aptitude test and according to them, the difficulty level of the questions asked is equal to or less than JEE Mains level. They are mostly conceptual and there will be very few numerical questions.

IISER aims to test your conceptual understanding rather than your problem-solving skills.

  • Maths - If you are preparing for JEE Advanced, then the questions usually asked in the maths section for the IISER aptitude test will be quite easy for you.
  • Physics - You can easily solve most of the questions if your basics are clear. The question also won’t require you to do lengthy calculations. Physics questions are usually at the JEE Mains level.
  • Chemistry - For Chemistry too, the questions will test your conceptual clarity.
  • Biology - Reading NCERT textbooks will be sufficient to score well in Biology.

So, to score well in the IISER aptitude test, thoroughly read your 11th and 12th textbooks.

It’s not possible to answer this definitively as IISERs don’t make information regarding cut-off public. But entry to IISER through KVPY is easier compared to other gateways like the IISER Aptitude Test.

One of my friends was selected for KVPY SX in 2017. At the time of college choices, his options were Pune, Kolkata, TVM, Tirupati. He finally got IISER Kolkata.

According to him, if you get a KVPY fellowship, there is a good chance that you will get into an IISER. But going by the trends of the last few years, you will need a rank below 600, in order to get IISER Pune.

For pure science, IISc is the obvious choice among these. It is the best in India, in terms of research interface, faculties, and alumni base.

If you are particularly interested in Physics, you should definitely choose IISc. It has an excellent Physics department. IISc Bangalore, Department of Physics has a Theoretical Cosmology group. The research interest of the group mostly involves early universe cosmology topics. For pure science courses, the preference order for these institutes is - IISc>>IISER>NISER

IISER Kolkata is the best IISER for Physics. It is especially good for Astrophysics. The ongoing research in the area is top-notch. There are labs such as CESSI (Center of Excellence in Space Sciences, India) inside the campus, spearheading research in Astrophysics and Astronomy area.

The faculties are well experienced and put more emphasis on building the fundamental concepts on priority.
