The mission of the Communication Studies (CMST) department is to prepare students to meet complex communication challenges across cultural, organizational, relational, and rhetorical contexts in the dynamic twenty-first century by: introducing them to relevant theories and concepts and also providing skill-building, collaboration, and scholarship experiences to promote conscious communication competence in their personal and professional development.

This option is designed to prepare you to succeed in modern organizations. With ongoing changes in technology, the use of teams, and the multiplicity of ways that organizations are structured, you need to be prepared to understand and adapt to an ever-changing world of work. If you choose this option, you will be expected to

  • Analyze the effects of communication technologies in organizations;
  • Analyze organizational culture and systems;
  • Apply appropriate theories to organizational settings;
  • Demonstrate communication competencies appropriate for the organizational setting, such as leadership, followership, and interpersonal communication;
  • Analyze organizational behaviors from diverse perspectives;
  • Construct original messages for a variety of audiences; and
  • Develop a professional development plan or portfolio.
