Political science is the study of government, public policy, and the political behavior of individuals and groups. Political science uses humanistic and scientific perspectives to examine relationships among societies and nations in all countries and regions of the world. The major introduces students to concepts in politics, policy issues, and the structure of governments. Students interested in law, civil service, or foreign service should consult a department advisor regarding an appropriate course of study. The Foreign Affairs concentration combines courses from international relations and comparative politics and is meant for those students interested in international careers in fields such as diplomacy, development, and security. This concentration requires 6th semester proficiency in a foreign language, participation in a professional seminar and it requires some foreign experience. Examples of foreign experience are domestic internships that are international in scope or study abroad in a foreign country.

The knowledge of government, public policy, political behavior, international relations and comparative politics, as well as foreign language proficiency and foreign work or study experience gained from a major in Political Science in the Foreign Affairs concentration, forms a strong career foundation. Graduates in Foreign Affairs may work in diplomacy, development, intelligence, outreach, or foreign policy design. This major is also excellent preparation for law school or graduate studies in public administration or international business.
