In addition to broad coverage in British and American literature, English majors gain a foundation in history, culture, and critical theory and develop strong interpretation, analysis, research, writing, and communication skills. Graduates are well prepared for careers in communications, publishing, education, outreach, and journalism. This major is also excellent preparation for graduate studies in English, cultural studies, education, women’s studies, law, or communications. English, like many majors, teaches content and skills that can be applied to a wide variety of career fields. This major does not restrict you to a specific field.
The goals of the English major include knowledge of British and American literature; understanding the historical and cultural range of literature, the development of language in literature, the strategies of textual interpretation; ability to conduct and use literary research and to write clearly and effectively.
