From government work to law, diplomacy or classroom teaching, graduates from our Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures find rewarding careers and numerous options. We offer courses in five European languages ? French, Italian, German, Russian and Spanish ? and majors in French, Italian, Spanish and modern languages (a combination of two languages). Our programs range from elementary language instruction through advanced courses in culture and literature and also include real-world study abroad experiences.

Our first- and second-year courses strengthen students? language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) through interactive classes. At the third-year level, you?ll study aspects of culture (film, music, patterns of civilization, business and even pop culture). Literature courses immerse you still deeper in both the art of language and a region?s social and political realities. In each course, you?ll find small classes that encourage student ? and professor ? interaction, and you can immediately use what you learn through our study abroad programs in France, Italy and Spain.
