Our primary training goals are to facilitate student integration of counseling theory, research, and practice; to cultivate an understanding of the mutual influences of practice and science; and to foster the development and application of holistic counseling skills. A foundational value of the program is to foster understanding, critical thinking and ethical decision-making.
We seek to integrate diverse multicultural perspectives into our students’ professional training and development. This emphasis is infused into the curriculum in various ways such as didactic instruction, guided exploration, and engagement in experiential projects and outreach. This work is reciprocally informed by theory and science to enhance service delivery to diverse populations.
Given the developmental nature of training in counseling, our training model is sequentially structured, providing for cumulative growth across the sequence, while recognizing the critical importance of ongoing integration of content knowledge, research, and counseling practice. As a program, we strive to prepare students to build successful professional careers while fostering an appreciation for the ongoing need to remain abreast of developing knowledge in the field.
