University of Montana International Student Admission

Students who match the University of Montana's qualifying criteria, such as English language competency and academics, must apply for admission. Applicants must complete the University of Montana admissions application and submit all required documents by May 15 for the Fall semester and October 15 for the Spring semester.

The University of Montana provides three types of foreign admissions based on TOEFL or IELTS scores: full admission, pathway admission, and conditional admission. Conditional admissions are available to students with lower language exam scores.

To be accepted into the university, international students must meet the following requirements:

Supporting Documents for International Students

• Completed application
• If you have ACT or SAT scores, do provide them but it's not mandatory.
• Beginning in secondary school and continuing until the highest degree of success, official or verified copies of non-U.S. academic credentials are required. The transcripts must be written in the original language then translated into English.
• Statement of Financial Support
• English Language Proficiency scores
• A minimum GPA of 2.5 (79-81%) on a 4.0 scale is required
• Statement of Purpose
• Letters of Recommendation
• Any other document required

Conditional Admissions: Conditional admission is available to students who do not satisfy the required English language skills for full admission but are otherwise academically prepared. Students submit International applications and all relevant supporting documentation to the Admissions Office, and students may be conditionally admitted after an evaluation of their academic qualifications.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

The international students must demonstrate a minimum level of English proficiency by submitting minimum English proficiency test scores as specified below:

Note: Exemptions from the English proficiency policy may be granted for the following reasons:

• Candidates who speak English as a first language;
• Applicants who have attended two or more years in a higher education institution where English is the major language of instruction; or
• Applicants who transfer an equivalent for WRIT 101.

Students from the countries listed below are not required to present proof of English language ability unless English is not their first language. Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and South Africa are among these countries.

US Visa for International Students

After being accepted as an international student at the University of Montana, you will receive a Form I-20 or DS-2019 from the International Students and Scholars Office (ISS). When applying for a student visa to the USA, you must use whichever form you are given. Please check this page from EducationUSA, a program inside the US Department of State, to identify the student visa you must apply for, as well as directions for applying for your visa.

You can apply for a visa at a US embassy or consulate before leaving the country after paying the I-901 SEVIS Fee and receiving a receipt.

• Statement of financial support
• Valid country passport
• Proof you paid the SEVIS I-901 fee
