• A degree in music education prepares students to teach music in schools and community settings: general (classroom) music, choral music, band, and orchestra. Our program, offered through the College of Creative Arts, enables students to apply for licensure to teach pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 students. Miami offers two tracks or emphases in music education: choral/general and instrumental. It is also possible to blend these tracks.
  • Miami’s music education program gives students more classroom clinical experience than most programs at other universities. Beginning in the student's first year, they will observe and participate in school visits, gradually increasing their role as participant-observer-teacher throughout their program of study. As students progress through the professional music education sequence, they spend increasing time with experienced teachers in a variety of urban, suburban, and rural schools. Students' school experiences will range from helping individual students and small groups in the school music classes to being responsible for an entire classroom or ensemble. Students will have opportunities to work directly with teachers and PK–12 students in the Greater Cincinnati and Dayton area. During the semester of student teaching, students are observed more frequently than during most programs at other universities – approximately every other week for an entire semester – for feedback, consultation, and guidance.
