Overview/Description

The undergraduate teaching of the department has been guided by both the requirements of regional industry and the need to provide a solid background to all students who wish to continue with research and graduate work. The ability to perform at the practical level on par with our best current students will always be required, but a solid formal and mathematical grounding is becoming an even stronger requirement. A first class scientific education must also include a deep appreciation of the liberal arts, which is encouraged by a broad curriculum.

Research in the department is carried out in the context of our doctoral program. This program is intended to extend our knowledge of fundamentals, to examine the application of those fundamentals to real life problems, and to provide young researchers with a deep understanding of the relationship between the satisfaction of intellectual curiosity and the solution of practical problems. The primary graduate teaching strives for providing very high quality educational opportunities to active professionals while at the same time encouraging and supporting a group of research students and researchers.
