Special education teachers work with students who have a wide range of learning, mental, emotional and physical disabilities as identified by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. They adapt general education lessons for students with mild and moderate disabilities, and teach basic skills, such as literacy and communication techniques, to students with severe disabilities. There is perhaps no more challenging yet personally satisfying career than that of someone who works with youth with disabilities. The Special Education major at Benedictine is approved by the Illinois State Board of Education and offers you the opportunity to earn licensure as a Learning Behavior Specialist I.
