The study of literature will form your judgment and intuition, and transform your ability to communicate, especially in writing. Our commitment is unmatched when it comes to mentoring students and forming graduates who can reason, write and speak exceptionally well. As an English major, you will join an ambitious and principled community of scholars and friends dedicated to the College's mission: the high calling of liberal education in the pursuit of truth. English is offered as both a major and minor.

In the English core curriculum, students examine rhetoric, composition strategy, and the literary tradition by reading classic authors such as Homer, Aristotle, Dante, Shakespeare, Milton, Melville, and Eliot.

Historical period courses and specialized studies build upon this foundation. These courses equip students to assess the significance of specific authors, themes, and genres within the framework of the larger literary conversation.

In addition to class offerings, students also have the opportunity to learn from the many distinguished lecturers that the department brings to campus.
