?Gettysburg College offers a program and Cinema and Media Studies that will provide a broad liberal arts perspective on a powerful part of students? lives today. This program offers both a major and minor in Cinema and Media Studies that include approaches from both Cinema Studies and paradigms for studying popular culture commonly known as Cultural Studies. Students will understand these media as not merely artistic forms, but also as cultural, economic and socio-political entities.
Learning Outcomes :
Students will gain a visual literacy in cinema and other media as texts, analyzing in depth how they are put together.Students will understand larger contexts for cinema and other media, namely the institutional, economic and socio/political dynamics always underpinning these media texts, most of all from a historical perspective that sheds light on present day conditions.Students will understand and critique various theories employed to explain media phenomena, including both aesthetic and cultural theories of cinema, television and other media.Students will obtain at least some firsthand production experience with these media.Students will understand the multiple aspects of globalization ? most of all cultural and economic ? through the study of media.Students will be able to think and write critically about film and other media, which are ubiquitous phenomena in the present day.
