Ex Umbra, the campus literary magazine is a popular extracurricular activity for English majors. Many also become members of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honors society. The English major offers three concentrations in literature, in writing, and in secondary education. The offerings in literature seek to enhance students understanding of vital cultural and aesthetic achievements of writers through the ages. Our writing program offers concentrated study and development in a skill that is vital to almost every profession. Students who complete our secondary education program earn licensure and are fully prepared to teach literature and writing at the high school level. The English major is traditionally one of the best paths to law school, and many of our recent graduates have gone on to become attorneys. Many others have gone on to graduate school in English, education, and other professional programs. In short, a major in English leads to one of the most versatile liberal arts degrees that can lead to any career in which excellent communication skills are vital.
