The physics department uses the Preliminary Examination as its comprehensive exam.
The test is given every year in the fall before the start of classes and covers senior undergraduate and first-year graduate level physics.
Normally students take the Preliminary Exam at the beginning of their second year.
Students who do not pass on the first attempt may retake the exam the following year.
The department usually does not guarantee funding for Master's students.
Students who wish to continue for a Ph.D. at UC Davis should apply directly to the Ph.D. Program.

Academic Eligibility:

A minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) from the institution where students have earned or will earn their bachelor's degree.
Successful applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent that is comparable to a degree.
Applicants whose native language or the language of instruction is not English must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
- The GRE score requirement for the 2021-2022 admission cycle has been waived for all students.

Indian Eligibility:

4 year Bachelor's Degree, a 3 year Bachelor's Degree with a Post Graduate Diploma or Master's Degree, or a higher degree.
