- Pioneering sociologist Auguste Comte referred to sociology as the "Queen of the Sciences" because it embodies the basics of all the other social sciences. Students selecting UC Davis’s sociology majors may choose from different concentrations (also referred to as "emphases") to suit their personal interests and career intentions. While their emphases allow students to concentrate their coursework in particular subfields, any emphasis chosen will be applicable to all career paths related to sociology.
- The sociology major offers four different emphases: general, law and society, social services, or comparative studies and world development.
- The sociology organizational studies major offers four tracks: business and society, public policy and social welfare, nonprofit and social movement organizations, or student-initiated.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- A high school diploma (or equivalent)
- Students who are not residents of California must earn a GPA of 3.40 or higher.
- SAT/ACT scores
- The University of California Board of Regents unanimously approved the suspension of the standardized test requirement (ACT/SAT) for all California freshman applicants until fall 2024.
- If students’ native language and school language of instruction prior to their study in the United States were not English, then they must demonstrate English proficiency. They can do so by submitting TOELF/IELTS score reports.
Indian Eligibility:
- Students must complete their standard XII years of education and sit for 10th and 12th-year board/state examinations.
Scores Required
SAT/ACT scores are made optional until fall 2024.
