The Linguistics and Cognitive Science Department offers a multidisciplinary approach to the study of language and the mind.

Majors take core courses in linguistics and cognitive science and then choose a track in either linguistics or cognitive science. Minors are offered in both areas.

  • Linguistics focuses on the scientific study of human language: its theoretical, descriptive, social and behavioral bases.
  • Cognitive science is concerned with a unified approach to the human mind and the nature of intelligent behavior, including mental phenomena like language, meaning, knowledge, perceiving, remembering, emotion and consciousness. Majors sub-concentrate in psychology or computer science.
