Specialties cover several major periods of Western music history, including medieval and Renaissance music, as well as the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Areas of interest also encompass: film music, Russian and Soviet music, the Second Viennese School, criticism, philosophy, aesthetics, and popular music studies. One of UB's greatest resources, and fundamental to all of our degree programs is the music library, conveniently located on site in the music building.

Historical Musicology at UB provides an immersive environment for students to explore the many avenues open in musical scholarship today. Training for graduate students is rigorous and demanding, specifically crafted to the needs of each scholar. As befits the pioneering history of the department, this field of study is perfect for students with an interest in developing unique approaches to music that simultaneously engage with, and contribute to, the field of musicology.
