Students are prepared for a variety of sport-related careers and must complete a required minor in general business, entrepreneurship, international business, journalism or marketing. Some of the career opportunities available to graduating sport management majors are as follows:
Sport business
Preparation of sport management majors for a career in sport business is enhanced by minors in general business, international business or entrepreneurship. This strong business component prepares students for management-level positions such as professional sport administrator, corporate administrator of sporting events, tournament director, university athletic director, business manager, fund-raising administrator and/or sport facility manager.
Sport journalism
A journalism minor is recommended for students interested in becoming sport journalists, sports information directors in intercollegiate athletic programs, athletic conference offices or sport governing bodies, or working in public/community relations with professional teams. The minor in journalism helps students develop key writing skills.
Sport marketing
A marketing minor enhances preparation of sport management students for careers such as account executives for professional teams, sales representatives for sporting goods companies, and marketing directors in intercollegiate athletic programs, conference offices, governing bodies or professional sports.
