Course Description

HNBGU, Garhwal offers PhD as a research course across different disciplines for a minimum duration of 2 years. The application process for PhD admissions generally commences in the month of July every year which continues till August. HNBGU has not yet announced the application dates for PhD admissions for the academic year 2021. However, the university is expected to start the admission process in the month of November this year. The PhD courses at HNBGU, Garhwal are offered in 40 specializations across 11 streams right from Engineering to Anthropology including Agriculture and Allied Sciences, Earth Sciences, Arts, Communication and Languages, Management, Law etc.
The PhD course duration at HNBGU varies from 2-5 years depending upon the type of specialization opted for.

The PhD course curriculum follows a semester system and the exams are conducted every six-months duration.

Candidates should have a master’s degree or a professional equivalent degree in the concerned subject or in a cognate or an allied subject with at least 55% aggregate marks or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point Scale from a recognized university.

HNBGU, Garhwal PhD Admission Process

HNBGU offers admissions to its PhD courses on the basis of a written entrance test followed by an interview. Candidates who satisfy the above mentioned eligibility criteria shall only be eligible to appear for entrance exam.

Candidates who successfully fill the application form will be required to appear for university entrance exam at the given date and venue.
To qualify the entrance test, candidates must score at least 50% aggregate marks (45% for OBC/SC/ST).
Following category candidates will be exempted from the university entrance test:
- Regularly appointed teachers of the university.
- Teacher Fellow (Under UGC Scheme)
- NET/SLET (Uttarakhand)/ GATE qualified candidates
- M.Phil. candidates of HNBGU in the concerned subject

Eligible candidates will then be required to appear for interview/viva-voce conducted by the concerned department of the university during which the candidates will be required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation.
70% of the weightage is given to the entrance exam performance of candidates while 30% weightage is assigned to the interview.
Final allotment of seats will be made on the basis of overall merit and preference opted by the candidates.
The selected candidates must have to pass a pre-Ph.D 6-month course for registration to the course.

Program Structure

Coursework and Credits: The Ph.D course work comprises 2 types of courses:
- Core Courses: These are mandatory for all students and carry 7 credits.
- Elective Courses: Students are required to choose these courses as per their interest and carry 8 credits.

- Evaluation: Evaluation is done on the basis of two sessional tests which comprise 40% of the total evaluation process and one end-semester examination which carries 60% weightage.
- Attendance: Students must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in all theory and practical classes separately. Candidates who failed to do so shall not be permitted to appear in end term examinations.
- Examinations: Candidates must secure a minimum of 50% marks in the courses taken together to pass that course. Sessional tests are conducted in the form of lab work, paper or oral presentation etc. Candidates who fail in sessional tests will not be permitted to appear for end semester examinations.

Thesis: Candidates are required to submit a 5000-word summary of the research work along with three copies of the thesis based on which remarks are given.
Financial Assistance/Scholarship: HNBGU provides financial assistance in the form of scholarships to research scholars. Below mentioned are some of them:

A scholarship of INR 1,500 is given to ten talented students belonging to the BPL category
Shyam Charan Scholarship for EWS students
Smt. Leela Kala Research Scholarship in the Botany department.
