If you are preparing for CAT, one question always stays in mind: “What will be my score in CAT?”. This is where a CAT Score Calculator becomes extremely useful. It helps you estimate your raw score, scaled score, and expected percentile even before the official results are declared.

The following article explains everything about the CAT Score Calculator, CAT exam structure, scoring system, normalization, and how percentiles are calculated. The language is simple, human-friendly, and beginner-safe so that anyone can understand it clearly.

What is CAT?

CAT stands for Common Admission Test. It is a national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management.

CAT score is used for admission into:

  • IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management)
  • Top MBA colleges like FMS, SPJIMR, MDI, IITs, and many private B-schools

CAT is conducted once a year, usually in November, in multiple slots on the same day.

What is a CAT Score Calculator?

A CAT Score Calculator is an online tool that helps you:

  • Calculate your raw CAT score
  • Estimate your scaled score after normalization
  • Predict your CAT percentile
  • Understand which IIMs or MBA colleges you may get calls from

You just need to enter:

  • Number of correct answers
  • Number of wrong answers
  • Section-wise attempts (optional)

The calculator does the rest automatically.

CAT Exam Pattern Explained Simply

CAT exam is divided into three sections. Each section tests different skills.

1. VARC – Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension

This section checks your English understanding.

Topics include:

  • Reading comprehension passages
  • Para jumbles
  • Sentence completion
  • Summary questions

Time: 40 minutes

Questions: Around 24

2. DILR – Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

This section checks your thinking and problem-solving skills.

Topics include:

  • Tables and charts
  • Puzzles
  • Arrangements
  • Logical sets

Time: 40 minutes

Questions: Around 20

3. QA – Quantitative Ability

This section checks your maths basics.

Topics include:

  • Arithmetic (percentages, profit and loss, time and work)
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Number system

Time: 40 minutes

Questions: Around 22

CAT Marking Scheme (Very Important)

Understanding marking is necessary to use a CAT Score Calculator correctly.

For MCQ Questions:

  • Correct answer: +3 marks
  • Wrong answer: -1 mark

For Non-MCQ (TITA) Questions:

  • Correct answer: +3 marks
  • Wrong answer: 0 marks (no negative marking)

This means accuracy matters more than attempts.

How to Calculate CAT Raw Score

Raw score is the first step in CAT score calculation.

Formula:

Raw Score = (Correct MCQs × 3) – (Wrong MCQs × 1) + (Correct TITA × 3)

Example:

  • Correct MCQs: 40
  • Wrong MCQs: 10
  • Correct TITA: 8

Raw Score = (40 × 3) – (10 × 1) + (8 × 3)

Raw Score = 120 – 10 + 24 = 134

This raw score is entered into the CAT Score Calculator.

What is CAT Score Normalization?

Since CAT is conducted in multiple slots, some slots may be slightly tougher or easier than others.

To ensure fairness, CAT uses normalization.

Normalization Means:

  • Your raw score is adjusted
  • Difficulty level of your slot is considered
  • Final score becomes the scaled score

This scaled score is what matters for percentile calculation.

Note: Candidates cannot calculate normalization manually. CAT Score Calculators use historical data and trends to estimate it.

What is CAT Percentile?

CAT percentile shows how many candidates you have performed better than.

Example:

  • 99 percentile means you scored better than 99 percent of candidates
  • 90 percentile means you scored better than 90 percent of candidates

Percentile depends on:

  • Your scaled score
  • Total number of candidates
  • Overall performance of all test-takers

How CAT Score Calculator Predicts Percentile

A CAT Score Calculator uses:

  • Past year CAT data
  • Expected difficulty level
  • Average score vs percentile trends
  • Number of test-takers

Example Estimate:

Scaled Score Expected Percentile
45–50 85–90
60–65 92–94
75–80 97–98
90+ 99+

These are approximate, not official.

Sectional Score and Sectional Percentile

IIMs do not look only at overall percentile.

They also check:

  • VARC percentile
  • DILR percentile
  • QA percentile

If you score very low in one section, you may miss IIM calls even with a good overall percentile.

Most IIMs require:

  • 70–80 percentile in each section
  • High overall percentile

How Accurate is a CAT Score Calculator?

CAT Score Calculator is:

  • Very useful for estimation
  • Good for shortlisting expectations
  • Helpful for post-exam planning

But remember:

  • It is not official
  • Actual percentile may vary slightly
  • Normalization is unpredictable

Still, it gives a strong idea of where you stand.

Why You Should Use a CAT Score Calculator

Benefits:

  • Reduces anxiety after exam
  • Helps plan GD-PI preparation early
  • Helps shortlist MBA colleges
  • Saves time and confusion
  • Gives realistic expectations

CAT Score Calculator FAQs

Ques. What is a CAT Score Calculator?

Ans. A CAT Score Calculator is an online tool that helps you calculate your estimated CAT score and predict your percentile based on the number of correct and incorrect answers. It gives a clear idea of your performance before the official result.

Ques. How is CAT score calculated?

Ans. CAT score is calculated using the official marking scheme:

  • Each correct answer gives 3 marks
  • Each incorrect MCQ gives minus 1 mark
  • TITA questions have no negative marking

The total obtained marks form your raw score.

Ques. What is raw score in CAT?

Ans. Raw score is the total marks you get before normalization. It is calculated using your correct and incorrect answers in all three sections of the CAT exam.

Ques. What is scaled score in CAT?

Ans. Scaled score is the adjusted score after normalization. Since CAT is conducted in multiple slots, normalization ensures fairness by adjusting scores based on slot difficulty.

Ques. What is normalization in CAT?

Ans. Normalization is the process used to balance score differences between easy and difficult slots. It ensures that no candidate gets an unfair advantage or disadvantage due to slot difficulty.

Ques. Can I calculate CAT percentile from raw score?

Ans. No. Percentile is calculated only after normalization. Raw score alone cannot decide your percentile because CAT percentiles depend on overall candidate performance.

Ques. How does CAT Score Calculator predict percentile?

Ans. The calculator uses past year trends, expected difficulty level, and score distribution to estimate your percentile. The result is approximate and not official.

Ques. Is CAT Score Calculator accurate?

Ans.CAT Score Calculator gives a close estimate but not the exact result. Actual percentile may vary slightly after official normalization and result declaration.

Ques. Does CAT Score Calculator show sectional scores?

Ans. Yes. Most calculators provide section-wise scores and percentile estimates for VARC, DILR, and Quantitative Ability. Sectional performance is important for IIM shortlisting.

Ques. Is there negative marking in CAT?

Ans. Yes. There is negative marking of 1 mark for every wrong MCQ. There is no negative marking for TITA questions.

Ques. What is a good CAT score?

Ans. A good CAT score depends on the level of competition. Generally:

  • 90 percentile requires a moderate score
  • 95 percentile requires a strong score
  • 99 percentile requires a very high score

Exact score varies every year.

Ques. Can the same CAT score give different percentiles?

Ans. Yes. CAT percentile changes every year based on exam difficulty and number of candidates. The same score can result in different percentiles in different years.

Ques. Do IIMs consider only CAT percentile?

Ans. No. Along with CAT percentile, IIMs consider academic record, work experience, diversity factors, and performance in the interview process.

Ques. When should I use CAT Score Calculator?

Ans. You should use the CAT Score Calculator after the response sheet is released and before the official result. This helps in college shortlisting and interview preparation.

Ques. Is CAT Score Calculator free to use?

Ans. Yes. Most CAT Score Calculators are completely free and can be used multiple times.

Ques. Can CAT Score Calculator predict IIM calls?

Ans. It can give an approximate idea but cannot guarantee IIM calls. Final shortlisting depends on multiple factors beyond CAT score.

M.Tech structural engineering at IIT Madras is both challenging and rewarding. IITM is a prestigious institution, and its tag holds a lot of value both inside and outside of India.

Time will pass very quickly during this course, and by the end of it, you’ll feel that there’s still a lot more to learn. The environment is quite competitive. If you’ll miss your lectures, it’ll be very hard to understand basic concepts while preparing for exams.

Some professors are very likable, but you’ll not like the teaching style of many. Added to it is the tremendous workload. You’ll be overwhelmed by the never ending assignments. You won’t be spoon fed by anyone. You’ll get the reference books, syllabi and lecture notes, but you’ll have to study by yourself on a regular basis.

Work hard by yourself, and show keen interest in learning. The professors will be happy to guide you and work with you, given that you show proper interest. They publish lots of research material every year, and are in constant search of good students to help them.

Your career will get a positive direction at IIT Madras if you’ll work hard and make the most of your time on campus.

Admission to a Ph.D. program at IIT Madras depends on a number of factors. The GATE cutoff doesn’t have much weightage in the selection process. For shortlisting, IIT Madras considers the 10th, 12th, graduation, and masters percentile along with your GATE percentile. You need to have a valid GATE score but the required score is lower compared to the M.Tech cutoff.

For selection, more emphasis is placed on your performance in the written test and interview.

Both IIT Delhi and IIT Madras are highly reputed institutes, and both have excellent electrical engineering departments. It is challenging to declare one institute as definitively better than the other as both are highly regarded and have their unique strengths. However, here are some points to consider that might help you in making a decision:

In terms of faculty, both IIT Delhi and IIT Madras have highly qualified and experienced professors, who are experts in their fields. However, the research output of IIT Delhi's electrical department is slightly higher than that of IIT Madras.

In terms of infrastructure and facilities, both institutes are well-equipped with state-of-the-art labs and equipment. However, IIT Madras has a larger and more extensive campus, which includes several research centers and facilities, making it a hub for cutting-edge research in the field of electrical engineering.

Both institutes have excellent placement records, with several reputed companies visiting the campus for recruitment. However, IIT Delhi has a slightly higher average placement package compared to IIT Madras.

Choosing between the two ultimately comes down to personal preferences and priorities. If you value research and a wider range of facilities, IIT Madras may be a better choice. However, if you prioritize placement opportunities and slightly higher research output, IIT Delhi may be the better choice.
