IIT Madras invites applications for P.hD and MS programs under regular/part-time/external schemes. If you have more than 65% in your UG and a decent GATE score, you will probably get a call for a written test. Once shortlisted, you will have to write an online or offline written test. The syllabus is similar to the GATE syllabus. If you clear the written test, you will get an interview call.

IIT Madras invites eligible applicants any time of the year for its Ph.D. and MS (Research) programs admission. The program has three modes, regular, part-time, and external schemes.

MHRD and other educational councils such as UGC, ICMR, AICTE, CSIR, DST, CSIR, etc offer Half-time Research Assistantship (HTRA) fellowship to applicants. The Assistantship fund is offered to only qualified applicants.

After applicants get shortlisted by the respective department, then you will be called for an interview or test and interview by the selection committee.

Eligibility for MS:

Graduates with a four-year degree in B.E or B.Tech can directly apply for admission to MS and Ph.D. in Engineering or other science streams.

MS candidates with 8 CGPA or above can upgrade to Ph.D. programs in the same stream or department. After the successful completion of the program, you will be awarded a dual degree of MS and Ph.D.

If you are looking for a joint Ph.D. program in Engineering and Sciences, you can also join other institutes such as the following.

  • IIT Madras & National University of Singapore
  • National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan
  • Curtin University, Australia
  • RWTH Aachen, Germany
  • University of Duisburg, Germany
  • Queensland University of Technology, Australia
  • The University of Technology, Sydney, Australia
  • University of Duisburg, Germany
  • University of Passau, Germany
  • University of Bordeaux, France & Michigan State University
  • University of Melbourne, Swinburne University, Australia
  • Deakin University, Australia,

Hope this clarifies your doubts.
