Formerly known as Nagpur University, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) was established in 1923 and is one of the oldest universities in India. It is accredited with 'A' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and is ranked as one of the top universities of India. Only candidates who possess the relevant qualifying degree i.e. masters degree are eligible for admission to research courses. For admission to M.Phil, candidates are shortlisted on the basis of marks obtained PET I Entrance Exam. Whereas, the selection of candidates for Ph.D. is done on the basis of performance in the university entrance examination known as PET II (Ph.D. Entrance Test). The admission process generally starts in the month of December.

Nagpur University follows odd and even semester pattern for all the courses offered. End-semester examinations are conducted in the months of May and November for even and odd semesters, respectively.
