Course Description
IGNOU PhD admission 2024 is expected to start in the month of January 2024. Interested candidates can apply online on the official website @ignou.ac.in. Admission to the PhD program at IGNOU is based on a written test followed by a personal interview conducted by the university.
IGNOU offers Doctoral programs in 12 different streams. The doctoral program offered at the university is both in distance as well as in regular mode. Admissions to the PhD program at IGNOU are based on scores in the entrance test followed by a personal interview or presentation. Candidates holding M.Phil. Degree (along with course work and dissertation both) or those candidates who have cleared NET or any other equivalent examination will be exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test. IGNOU Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must have a master’s degree in the relevant discipline from a recognized university by UGC.
- There is a relaxation of 5% marks for reserved category candidates (SC/ ST/ OBC).
- Candidates holding M.Phil. Degree (along with course work and dissertation both) or those candidates who have cleared NET or any other equivalent examination will be exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test.
IGNOU Ph.D. Admisson Process
The selection is done on the basis of the written test followed by an interview. Applications found suitable for admission will be called for the entrance test. Shortlisted candidates on the basis of their performance in the written test will be called for the interview round. Offer letters for admission will be sent to the Selected Candidates only.
Note: Candidates holding M.Phil. Degree (along with course work and dissertation both) or those candidates who have cleared NET (conducted by UGC/ CSIR/ ICAR) or any other equivalent examination will be exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test.
IGNOU Ph.D. Entrance Test
- The list of shortlisted candidates who will be required to appear for the Entrance Test will be displayed on the IGNOU website.
- The admit card will also be released on the official website of IGNOU one week prior of the exam date.
- Candidates must bring their admit card to the exam center, else they will not allow sitting for the written test.
- Applicants have to bring an original identity proof having a photograph, such as Aadhar Card, Voter ID Card, Driving License, Passport and ID card at the examination center.
- Students must score a minimum of 50% marks in the entrance test to qualify the exam.
- The Entrance Test will be held in 13 cities.
Interview/ Presentation
- Qualified candidates in the written test will be called for interview round/ Presentation.
- Offer letters for admission will be sent to the Selected Candidates only.

IGNOU Ph.D. Assignments
Assignments constitute continuous evaluation. The marks that you secure in the assignments will be counted in your final result. As mentioned earlier, an assignment of a course carries 30% weightage. You are therefore advised to take your assignment seriously.
Non Submission of Assignment
The TMA for each semester can be downloaded from the Student Zone of the University website. You have to complete the assignment within the due dates specified in the assignment booklet. You will not be allowed to appear for the term-end examination for any course if you do not submit the assignment in time for that course. If you appear in the term-end examination, without submitting the assignments, the result of the term-end examination is liable to be canceled.
