As a college BIT Mesra is a great option. Few of my friends attended the college and here are their thoughts regarding it.

  • The college campus is serene and full of greenery.
  • The infrastructure and facilities offered are great as the college has rebuilt its main building a few years back
  • Sports and gym facilities are decent. There is a separate gym in the girl's hostel.
  • The placement scenario for BIT Mesra is good, especially for branches like CSE/IT. In the 2021 placement drive, the average CTC offered was INR 11.76 LPA.

Overall, it is a good college.

There are quite a few drawbacks when it comes to BIT Mesra. Let me elaborate further on the same for you:

  • You will probably not have any campus life in the evening. All the people from the college will go back by 8 pm and you will probably not see anyone walking on the roads at all.
  • If you compare the same thing to an IIT, you will see that their campus is buzzing after hours. There’s usually someone who is playing the guitar and students interacting with each other.

In my opinion, you can’t expect to share ideas or build an impact without this kind of social interaction.

  • If you are a girl on campus, you will be put through quite a few sexist rules. All through the four years, you will be made to live on a twin-sharing basis in a room meant for single occupancy.
  • You will have to return to your hostel by 8 pm and give a roll call, which is much like a prisoner count. But, you can leave your room during curfew hours ( 8 pm to 6 am). The administration really needs to step up its security measures and lighting around the campus.
  • You will also realize that the administration is very stubborn with obtuse professors and a lot of internal politics. There is a severe lack of student constitution. The administration is not ready to make the required changes. Along with this, many students are not ready to take the initiative to make amends for this.

From my friend’s experience, the campus needs better security measures, more medical stores, a policy that regulated food prices (the canteens can be expensive), and a campaign to open the lawns.

This happened with one of my friends when she was in her first year. As we all know it is quite compulsory for every student to sign the register in order to get attendance every day and this regularly happens outside the mess before students enter to have dinner.

It happened on that important day when my friend was tired of signing every day and she chose to sign for the whole month on the same day. However, the majority of it was compelled by the fact that the register isn't checked thoroughly but on that particular day, the superintendent checked the register and complained further. Eventually, the DSW's office inflicted a black dot to serve as a warning to other students. The above incident has caused many laughing riots on several occasions.

BITS Pilani is more famous and has better industry recognition. It offers a lot of academic freedom to students. It follows a zero attendance rule policy. Due to the strict selection process, the peer group of the institute is excellent. You will be sharing your lectures with some of the sharpest minds in the country. Owing to better industry connect, students get better internship opportunities from BITS Pilani.

At first, I would like you to know that there are certain causes behind the decline in quality. I've mentioned below a few of them here.

  • Before there was no reservation at BIT Mesra. After 2006 they started a reservation policy. It is the first and foremost reason that became a harbinger for the others.
  • According to many student reviews, the faculty at the institute are not that good. There is always one professor out of 20 who can be designated as a professor in every department.
  • If you are in the T&P department then your placement is guaranteed along with the placement of your friends. As you will be in the head position and have easy access to the placement exams.

Being said that, the institute has many pros too.

BIT Mesra isn’t a good option for M.Tech. It doesn’t have a good research culture. The placement opportunities offered are average. As per BIT Meshra placement trends, some tech companies such as Infosys, IBM, PWC, Hyundai, Amdocs, Cognizant, etc. recruit M.Tech students. Data Analyst, Java Developer, etc. are some of the common job roles offered by these companies.

A relative of mine used to be a student of BIT Mesra. She and a number of her peers have chosen Mr. Anup Kumar Keshri to be the best professor at BIT Mesra.

  • Professor Keshri himself is an alumnus of BIT Mesra and he was a student of the Computer Science Branch. Despite being in the CS Department, Professor Keshri was impressed by Professor P.K. Choudhary who did not belong in the department. His teaching abilities caught the eyes of Professor Keshri.
  • Professor P.K. Choudhary belonged to the Mechanical Department. He taught engineering drawing.
  • Even though Prof. Keshri was not a student of Mechanical Engineering, he did a paper on Professor Choudhary’s subject in 1996.
  • In addition to that, in spite of not being a student, Professor Keshri is sure that after some revision, he would be able to take classes in Mechanical Engineering.

He is thankful to Professor Choudhary for teaching him the ‘Language of Engineers’, on which Professor Keshri did the paper in 1996. He did not have to refer to any textbook for preparing himself for the paper. He wishes to be a teacher like Professor Choudhary.

A friend of mine who graduated from BIT Mesra was asked the same question. He does not think that BIT Mesra has gone down drastically.

It has, according to him, neither gone down in quality nor moved ahead particularly, in the pace the country has been moving ahead. BIT Mesra is one of the many industries that has not moved forward significantly.

  • Some of the reasons for this could be the lack of research, lethargy in administration, faculty not being up to the mark, the course structure being rigid, less connection(s) with the industries.
  • A big reason for these inconveniences is the lack of leadership with a vision. Everyone, starting from the Deans to the VCs wish to take their institutions to great heights.
  • BIT Mesra requires its students to write even scrutiny applications on a printed page and submit them in person.
  • The lack of vision is predominant in the institution. This also includes mess bills, teaching methodologies, and internship procedures.

It would be very difficult for BIT Mesra to compete with institutes that are applying for the “Institutes of Eminence” tag by the Central Government. In the foreseeable future, BIT Mesra will be an above-average institution; chances of it being perceived as a premium institution are slim.

However, my friend does hope that someone takes charge of the institution and pulls it out of the many uncertainties it is facing currently.
