If you are considering pursuing an MBA, it is advisable to not opt for engineering as it may not be relevant to achieving your goals. Instead, studying economics could prove to be beneficial.

If you are looking for a specific course at NIT Trichy, it is recommended taking up Production Engineering. This is considered to be the best course for someone with managerial ambitions.

Now, you may be skeptical about someone suggesting a particular stream of engineering for an MBA. However, here are some of the suggestions:

  • The curriculum at NIT Trichy covers Operations Management in great depth. By the time you graduate, your knowledge in operations would be on par with that of a first-year management student.
  • You also learn the basics of economics with Industrial Economics.
  • Depending on your choice of electives, you can also gain knowledge in finance.

On a lighter note, the course is not very demanding, so you will have plenty of time to prepare for entrance exams or pursue other interests.

Some people might choose this college only on the basis of reputation and low fees. They might not be aware of the branch. But this branch has very limited employment opportunities, given the market condition of the manufacturing sector.

The employment sector is restricted mainly to steel and other alloy manufacturing plants. Some other areas are the material testing labs in automobile industries such as Indian Oil, HAL, NALCO, etc.

One more thing that you should keep in mind is that the conditions in steel plants, as well as aluminum plants, are very unfavorable. The package and growth opportunities that you get are not as remunerative as the ones you get in the service sector such as IT.

Because of this situation, the majority of the graduates change their field. They either go for their Masters, PhDs or for an MBA.

Companies like Tata Steel, Vedanta Jindal, etc. pay well, but they hire a very limited number of graduates. These manufacturing units are highly polluting and hence located at remote locations, far from the main cities.

Once you go into research, there are better options abroad and India as well.

You should definitely consider all the facts before you decide. If your motive is an MBA, then don’t waste these 4 years. Simply go for graduation or any other course which gets preference in MBA colleges. But if you choose some other course, do it from a good, reputed college because the environment matters a lot.
