New Delhi: Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, has joined hands with the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, to collaborate and create a cooperative programme in scientific and mathematics education.
A memorandum of agreement (MoA) has been signed between TISS Mumbai and IISER Pune, in this regard. The proposed programme will enable students entering IISER Pune to select and specialise in science teaching.
This collaborative programme was designed to prepare expert science teachers and realise the NEP 2020s vision of multidisciplinarity and bringing excellence to the teaching profession by combining the scientific competence of IISER Pune and the teacher education skills of TISS.
During the course of the proposed joint programme, the students will be exposed to cutting edge teaching and research from both institutions.
Earlier, the MoA was signed on December 9, 2022, in the presence of Prof. Shalini Bharat, Director of TISS, Prof. Jayant B. Udgaonkar, Director of IISER Pune, and Prof. Bino Paul, Deputy Director of TISS.
Prof. Bhas Bapat, a physics professor and chair of the coordination committee for the department of science education at IISER Pune, Prof. Padma Sarangapani, chair of the Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education (CETE) at TISS, Mr. Narendra Mishra, acting & deputy registrar at TISS, and Col. G. Raja Sekhar (Retd.), registrar at IISER Pune were also present.
When discussing this MoA, Prof. Shalini Bharat, the director of TISS, stated, "TISS has always addressed national development needs.
Through the partnership with IISER Pune, the institute can work together to provide students with a cutting-edge multidisciplinary education that is in line with NEP 2020's goals. Since its founding, the Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education (CETE) at TISS has made strides in teacher education in India and the global South. The planned combined programme will undoubtedly produce a new generation of scientists, researchers, and Educators, Bharat said.
Prof. Udgaonkar reiterated these ideas when he stated that TISS and IISER Pune are engaging into an arrangement to build cooperative programmes in teacher education in Science and Mathematics.
Prof said that through the partnership in teaching and research, the Agreement will improve the standard of science education in India. By doing this, the two institutes will be able to combine their expertise in a variety of fields, including the complementing social and natural sciences. The proposed joint programme complies with the NEP 2020's advice on the value of multidisciplinary education.
The objective of the joint program is to give students simultaneous exposure to teaching, research, and education in the natural Sciences, he said.
According to Prof. Padma Sarangapani, who spoke about the significance of this MoA for aspiring scientific Educators, One of the objectives of the Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education is to increase standards of teacher education throughout the nation,
A step in that direction is being taken by this new joint programme. TISS Mumbai's partnership with IISER Pune demonstrates how organisations can work together to enhance one another's strengths, Sarangapani said.
