Tamil Nadu Medical Colleges receive a total of 1450 MBBS seats and an additional of 100 more seats are expected for the current academic year 2021-22.
State Health Minister MA Subramaniam said in a press conference that the central government has given the nod to add 600 seats, with 150 seats per medical college in Tamil Nadu. These seats would be added to four of the eleven new medical colleges situated in Dindigul, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, and Krishnagiri.
With the additional seats for MBBS, the total number of medical seats in the state medical colleges is 9100. Early this year, the TN Government had sought MCI’s approval for 800 MBBS seats, which received a nod. Following this, the state began targeting a total of 1650 MBBS seats in the new colleges.
The health minister also mentioned, Coimbatore Medical College is expected to increase a total of 100 new seats as the college had already got the permission to 150 seats and now with an additional 100 seats, the total number of seats will increase by 250.
Addressing the visit of the Union government's medical inspection team, the minister said it has found minor errors in the quality of books and furniture in the newly established state medical colleges. As a result, the college officials are on their toes ensuring that everything is accurate as per board's parameters.
Earlier, the leading educators of Tamil Nadu had announced that the state might witness a decline in the overall cut off marks for the NEET 2021, this year. The rise in the number of seats was one of the several prominent reasons highlighted by them. However, now, it is expected that the NEET cutoff marks for the candidates across all the categories will be reasonably low.
