The Tamil Nadu Government would follow the executive order route to establish the 7.5 percent reservation in undergraduate medical courses for government school students on October 29, 2020, Thursday. 

The reservation would be provided to candidates who have qualified for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) from academic session 2020-21 onwards.

Although the bill in this regard is still pending with Governor Banwarilal Purohit, the state government has made the final decision.

According to the letter to DMK President M. K. Stalin by Governor Purohit, he needs a couple of days or three to four weeks to arrive at a final decision on the bill.

However, the government order states that there was an immediate need to decide on this issue since the NEET undergraduate results have been out, and the admission process has commenced.

The government also stated in the order that under Article 162 of the Constitution, the power to issue executive directions is equivalent to legislative powers.

Thus, the government has formed a policy decision and released the order to provide 7.5 percent seats on a priority basis of the undergraduate medical courses to Class 6 to 12 students who have studied in state government schools.

Students will get a 7.5 percent reservation in State Government quota seats offered by all government medical and dental colleges. The reservation is also applicable to the seats allocated by the state government for all disciplines, including the self-financing medical/dental colleges, minority and non-minority categories.

The Government order also states, “The above horizontal reservation shall be provided in each category of vertical reservation followed in the State of Tamil Nadu within the 69% reservation from the academic year 2020-2021.”
