New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) was granted permission by the Supreme Court on Friday to extend the NEET PG medical enrollment deadline for the years 2022–2023 until November 25.

In its appeal, the NMC requested an extension because the COVID-19 shutdown and restrictions had postponed the start of the NEET PG counselling for the academic years 2020–2021 and 2021–2022. 

The appeal was considered today by a bench that included Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli, and the panel granted the NMC's request for an extension of the NEET PG admissions deadline until 2022. 

To avoid further delays in the admissions process, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) urged state counselling agencies to conduct NEET PG counselling in their respective states following the timetable posted on the NMC website, nmc.org.in, on October 7.

As of yet, the Medical Counselling Committee has made public the Round 2 counseling's full results. The registration period for the mop-up round, which is anticipated to begin soon, is set to end on October 31.

Given that several seats remained open, the NMC revised the cut-offs across categories this week by 25%.

Students who would be assigned seats in the mop-up round were scheduled to report to their respective institutions by November 14 by the NMC's initial schedule, which was released after roughly a three-month delay following the release of results in June this year. On November 9, the outcomes of the mop-up counselling were supposed to be released.

This year, candidates have been calling for a postponement of the NEET PG exam, which was held in May. They had given the COVID-19 pandemic as the justification for their request, which was a lack of preparedness. 

A postponement of the start of the PG academic year will affect patient care nationwide, and the NMC had warned the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had turned down the students' request.
