New Delhi: The Delhi High Court ordered St. Stephen's College to observe the admissions guidelines set forth by Delhi University, and the Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to postpone that order.

The college will need to admit general category or non-minority students based on their performance on the CUET or Common University Entrance Test.

Justices Ajay Rastogi and C. Ravikumar's bench responded after hearing St. Stephen's appeal of the Delhi High Court's decision, "We discover no reason to stay the judgement. As a result, the request for temporary relief is denied.”

One of the best colleges in the nation, St. Stephen's College, had appealed the High Court's order requiring it to follow Delhi University's admissions procedures to the Supreme Court.

The high court ordered the Christian minority institution to abide by the Delhi University admissions policy in its order dated September 12 by giving the CUET score 100% weight when admitting non-minority students to its undergraduate programmes.

The court had ruled that non-minority class students could not have interviews with the college and that enrollment should be based solely on CUET results.

The Delhi University praised the high court's decision and assured applicants that there would be "no problem" because undergraduate admissions would proceed according to plan.

According to DU registrar Vikas Gupta, the university will release its initial available seats for undergraduate courses on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The release had been postponed because the SC was scheduled to hear St Stephen's appeal of the high court's decision on Wednesday.
