New Delhi: The placement cell of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SSPU) has only provided job placements for a total of 1,888 out of 6,122 students in placement sessions of the last five years. This data has been revealed in the Right to Information (RTI) query filled by the student authority.
As per the report, Kuldeep Ambedkar, President of Studen's Helping Hand has filed an RTI to enquire about the placement statistics of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SSPU). The report has shown that the placement has not been able to provide placement to all students of the university.
The SPPU Placement data shows how the prominent state university is lagging behind in providing placements and job offers to students, while on the other hand, private universities are reaching out to placement divisions to provide their students with better career opportunities.
Referring to the data, Kuldeep Ambekar said, "The university administration spent Rs3,410,743 on this cell in the last five years but comparatively, very few students have benefitted from it”.
“Whereas most of these funds are used for maintenance and payment to staff under this cell and four other companies have been formed under it. But there are no details about how much work the staff is doing or what exactly the expenses incurred” he added.
SPPU placement cell, which was founded in 2017 was only able to offer placements to 1,888 out of a total of 6,122 students who applied for placements in the past five years. In 2020, the university was unable to provide placements due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
Following the RTI query, the university has only provided the number of students placed out of total registered students, and it did not provide any details of names of students, their starting packages, and recruiters' names to the student authority.
In response to the query, SPPU Registrar Prafulla Pawar said, “The cell was formed in 2017 for conducting training programs for students and faculty in the university. Whereas there were no direct placements carried out and these were carried out by the respective departments.”
