The Supreme Court passed an order on Sunday which allows Overseas Citizens of India to participate in NEET 2021 UG counselling in the general category. This order was passed as a response to a petition filed by OCI candidates. They want the Ministry of Home Affairs to treat them equivalent to Non-Resident Indians(NRIs) for the purpose of college admissions.
The court responded by saying, “We are of the view that at least for this academic year: 2021-2022, petitioners are entitled to be considered for admission to all medical seats where OCIs were eligible earlier. Therefore, we direct the NTA to declare NEET 2021 result for the petitioners and the eligible petitioners are permitted to appear for the counselling in the general category. This order is confined to the academic year 2021-2022”

The plea referred to the fact that OCIs have undergone many years of schooling in India, and their families live and work in India. However, they are not permitted to compete with the general pool of candidates. Instead, they are forced to compete for a very small number of seats earmarked for NRIs.
This means that they also have to pay unreasonably high fees which they cannot afford unlike NRIs whose families are living and working in the global west and have more access to financial resources, the plea said.
NEET UG 2021 Counselling
The counselling process will be conducted separately for AIQ and State quota seats. MCC will conduct NEET 2021 counselling for 50% AIQ seats. The states will conduct the counselling for the remaining 50% of state quota seat counselling. Only the candidates who have qualified for NEET 2021 will be eligible for further admission process.
NEET 2021 Reservation
NEET 2021 Reservation proves extremely fruitful at the time of the counselling process. However, the candidates need to submit the required documents. From this year, NEET Reservation in 15% AIQ seats which are contributed by the State/UTs to the Central Pool admission will be 27% OBC-NCL and 10% for EWS category candidates.
