SAT 2024: As per the official statement made by College Board, U.S high school students will now have to appear for SAT through online means. Students will use laptops for exam purposes rather than pencil and paper from session 2024.

Following the statement made by College Board, students who will appear for the new digitized SAT exam will have two hours instead of three to answer all the given questions. The exam will become shorter and test-takers will be able to use calculators to solve the math portion.

SAT to Go Digital

Referring to the decision, Priscilla Rodriguez, a Vice President of a Nonprofit Organization that develops SAT for American students said, "The digital SAT will be easier to take, easier to give, and more relevant".

"We're not simply putting the current SAT on a digital platform - we're taking full advantage of what delivering an assessment digitally makes possible" he added.

For years, U.S High School students who wish to take admission to top institutes had to appear for SAT examination through offline means. The offline SAT exam is lengthy and includes multiple-choice questions which students had to answer through the OMR sheet mode.

The math, reading, and writing sections of SAT jointly hold a total of 1,600 scores. Based on students' performance in the entrance test, they are further selected for admission seats in various SAT scores accepting universities.

Earlier, to provide relief to SAT test-takers, College Board conducted a pilot program for digital SAT in the United States and other countries in the month of November 2021. As per the result, the digital version of the exam was found to be less stressful than the offline one.

Study in the U.S.A: Top Universities, Degrees Offered

After evaluating the positive results, the College Board is now preparing to implement digital SAT for students in the U.S from the session 2024. With this, students will take the test with their own laptop, tablet, or school-issued device.

During the commencement of SAT 2021, only 1.5 million students in the high school class of 2021 were able to appear for the examination. In the year 2020, over 2.2 million students appeared for the examination.

The reason behind the decrease of students appearing for SAT is found to be the Covid-19 pandemic. With the digitized version of the exam, the College Board is expecting to see an increase in SAT 2023 and 2024 data.
