Soon after, the Puducherry medical college made it possible for students who had been denied access to the internship classes to continue their classes in the college.

Speaking about the reduction of additional fees, M. Narayanassamy, President of the UT ALL CENTAC Student Parent Association, said that the additional price was reduced from INR 1.2 lakh per year to INR 80,000 following the discussion with the college administration.

This fee is in addition to the INR 3.13 lakh annual "tuition" fee set by the Fee Fixation Committee for the college, he said.

Further, the students are expected to complete their internships by July 31, 2023. The parents accepted this compromise in order to avoid losing a year and missing their opportunity to sit for the NEET PG entrance exams, he added.

Meanwhile, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued the new fee fixation rules for the current academic year.

According to the new NMC regulations, the tuition for 50% of the seats in private medical colleges and deemed medical universities must be equal to that of the government medical colleges in the state.

With the new NMC guidelines, 50% of the seats at Puducherry's four deemed universities will have fees equal to those at government medical institutions, which will undoubtedly open up opportunities for students who previously were turned away due to excessive tuition.

Earlier, on July 20, the NMC informed the deemed universities about the new rules through a letter and made them clear that adherence was mandatory.
