As per the Punjab Engineering College's placement data, a total of 145 companies, including Microsoft, Arcesium, SalesForce, JP Morgan, American Express, Goldman Sachs, Airbus, Texas Instruments, Mastercard and Amazon, made 461 offers to the batch of 2019-20 students.

Despite the current pandemic situation, Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh, witnessed a 28 per cent increase in the total number of jobs offered during this year's training.

According to the university's PEC placement data, a total of 145 companies, including Microsoft, Arcesium, SalesForce, JP Morgan, American Express, Goldman Sachs, Airbus, Texas Instruments, Mastercard and Amazon, made 461 offers to 2019-20 students (compared to 360 last year).

Placement will continue until September 30. The highest PEC Placement Season package of INR 42 lakh per year (LPA) is offered to a total of eight students by Microsoft.

Last year, the same company offered five students the same package. The highest bid for the 2017-18 batch was INR 37 LPA.

The average package offered was recorded at INR 10.2 LPA, an increase from 9.4 LPA last year. Pre-placement offers also increased from 83 to 89.

Talking about the 2020 Placement Drive, PEC Director Dheeraj Sanghi said, "Earlier, only those students with more than 6 CGPAs were allowed to sit for a placement.

This year, all those who have completed their academic credits, regardless of CGPA, could sit for placement, as all those with a degree from PEC deserve to be considered for a placement.

The PEC Placement 2020 offers students from the electronics and communication engineering (ECE) and computer science engineering divisions the highest possible packages.

ECE was able to clinch the INR 42 LPA package, a significant upgrade from last year's INR 19.96 LPA package.

The highest package offered to civil engineering students was INR 17.5 LPA, an improvement from last year's INR 10.8 LPA.

In the meantime, the highest package offered to both the mechanical and production engineering branches saw a drop, i.e. INR 17.5 LPA and INR 14.0 LPA respectively, which last year was INR 21 LPA.

PEC placement in-charge Dr JD Sharma said, “44% of all jobs were related to coding. Core jobs formed 25% of all offers while 13% of the jobs were from the analytics sector.”

Consulting, operations and finance were relatively less popular with just 10%, 6% and 2% of all jobs on offers, respectively. The official stats also revealed that only 14 students excused themselves from placements this year to pursue higher education.

In the two previous batches of 2018-2019 and 2017-2018, 36 and 43 students, respectively, opted to pursue higher studies after graduation.

Out of the total jobs offered, only 32 per cent went to girl students. Mechanical engineering, a branch not very popular among girls, saw just 6% placement among girls.

In the electrical engineering branch, on the other hand, 40% of jobs were offered to girls. Recruiters such as RBS, NXP, JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs purposely hired more females for better gender ratio.

Considering the ongoing pandemic situationalmost 22 companies conducted virtual placements, most of these companies are from the healthcare, pharma, insurance and investment banking sectors.

Companies such as United Airlines, which earlier revoked their offers due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, also took students on board in separate job profiles.
