OCI and PIO Students Can Get Admission to IITs through JEE Advanced; No Need to Appear for JEE Main Exam

New Delhi: As per the official notification released by IIT Guwahati, students who are from Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) category can now get direct admissions to top IITs in India through JEE Advanced examination.

Following this announcement, foreign national students do not need to appear for JEE Main to join the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across India. They can appear for JEE Main if they want to, however their marks will not be considered for JEE Advanced.

Informing about this decision, the official notice reads, "The foreign national candidates who have studied or are studying in India or abroad at 10+2 level or equivalent at the time of registering for JEE (Advanced) 2023 are not required to write JEE (Main) 2023".

"They may register for JEE (Advanced) 2023 directly subject to the fulfillment of other eligibility criteria. Candidates who are not citizens of India (by birth or naturalized) and/or are OCI/PIO card holders are treated as foreign nationals", it reads.

Till now, students who belong to OCI and PIO categories had to appear for JEE Main examination in order to qualify for JEE Advanced. They were required to appear for the preliminary entrance exam to secure their admissions seats in top IITs in India

With this new IIT Admission Criteria, Persons of Indian Origin and Overseas Citizens of India will be given admission through the 10% supernumerary seats. These candidates will not be considered in the reservation of seats under General, OBC, SC, ST and PwD Categories.

The official notice reads, "Seats allotted to such foreign national candidates are supernumerary, with a cap of 10% of the total number of seats in every course. These candidates are outside the ambit of reservation of seats under GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD categories.

"There are no separate supernumerary seats or subcategories for females in the foreign national supernumerary seats," the information brochure states. For more details about the JEE Exam conducted by NTA, candidates can visit the official website at jeeadv.ac.in.
