National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai will conduct its admission process in a different way, said the NITIE Mumbai Director, Professor MK Tiwari.

NITIE Mumbai is very popular amongst the other institutes for its Post-graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIM). In an interview, the NITIE Mumbai director Professor Manoj Kumar Tiwari spoke about the b-school's academic strategy, admission criteria, and many other factors. The institute is expanding and discovering various emerging sectors of Management education.

Speaking about NITIE's strategy to prepare the students for industry, Tiwari said that the institute was initially set up to serve the industrial requirements of the country and the institute is entirely committed to achieving this goal. As a result, various sectors including FMCG, logistics, finance, and marketing approach the institute for consultancy purposes.

He continued saying that the NITIE alumni hold top positions in prominent industrial organizations across the world. Subsequently, their inputs are utilized to tailor the courses and programs at NITIE.

In order to give industry exposure to the students, the institute organises at least four to five lectures from industry speakers. NITIE's legacy and old practice of connecting with the industry and institute mentors has led to the high track record of all the students getting SIP placed, he said.

When asked for securing 12th position in the NIRF Ranking 2021, he said that the institute's hardcore parameters such as industry connect research, outreach, etc. all components have increased and owing to the pandemic, the institute couldn't hire regular faculty, which is one of the reasons for the marginal change in the rankings.

Speaking about the new courses that will be offered in future, Tiwari said that NITIE was the first institute in India to introduce the online examination and the first to launch an online admission process, where the institute has been conducting the admission process through the online mode for 150 different MDP programs.

Further, he talked about the two programs being offered online from the USA, one of them with Professor David Simchi-Levi, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which has been very successful with more than 800 industry professionals participating in the program. This is the reason, NITIE offers around 5 to 6 new programs in digitization in SCM, and Fintech domains.

Tiwari spoke about a new program that NITIE is planning which is marketing analytics and programs based on the broader aspects of SCM with a focus on analytics will also be introduced. He said that NITIE will take up those things from the next academic year 2022, that will be useful to serve society and industry in a better way.

When asked about the NITIE admission process amidst the pandemic, Tiwari replied saying that the admission process for the NITIE Courses will be completely different from the existing process. The main objective will be on those students who have good academic records, someone who has served industry, those who have a strong desire to learn & achieve something, and those who have respective backgrounds for the program.

He said that the online admission process will not be like the traditional way. Currently, the institute considers cutoff scores of GATE and CAT. However, this comprehensive admission process will not draw the attention of a huge number of candidates.

As a result, the NITIE is trying to see a different mix of things that will help to fulfill the needs and requirements for offering the online courses especially in the supply chain management, supply chain analytics, marketing analytics, and digitization domains, he said.

Professor Tiwari talked about the number of seat intake at NITIE. Despite the fact that there are 680 seats offered at NITIE, the institute is taking only 615 students as the hostel is yet to be constructed. Therefore, the institute has requested the ministry to fill the seats when the hostel is ready.

He concluded saying that there will be no extension of seats for the regular programs, but the institute will soon introduce online courses that will be offered through the online mode.
