New Delhi: NIT Goa has invited 30 Goan students from local engineering colleges to intern with the institute. The 30 chosen Goan students will be able to work alongside faculty members and researchers at the institution for 45 days.
NIT Goa will provide flexible timings for these undergraduate students. The opportunity is similar to opportunities offered by all prestigious institutes in the US. They can do the internship over the weekends during the academic year. Completing 45 days of the internship is mandatory for the students. The students will receive an incentive of 4500 INR for working 45 days of the internship.
Gopal Mugeraya, NIT Goa director, has said “There are many brilliant students studying in local engineering colleges, but often seek employment soon after completing their engineering programme. We want to get such students interested in research. The programme is specially designed to benefit Goan students. I believe that research should be an integral part of the teaching-learning process and the SIP is an effort in this direction.”

The NIT will invite applications each year from interested students under the SIP, and 30 will be selected by the director himself. The students will be placed with departments at NIT based on each one’s interests as per the NIT director during the selection process.
“Interns will be accepted for all the departments of the NIT,” Mugeraya said. The chosen students will work in their internship with NIT Goa faculty members and students pursuing PhDs at the institute. The Director informed that the NIT has received INR 90-crore worth of research projects from different government and private agencies from across the country and abroad. The interns, he said, would greatly benefit by getting a peek into the research work being carried out on some prestigious projects.
“The students will spend 45 days at the NIT and this internship period will be like an orientation towards research for them. They will also be provided with a nominal internship incentive of INR 4,500 for the 45 days spent,” Mugeraya said.
At the end of the internship, the students will have to submit a mini-project. After its evaluation, they will receive a certificate from the NIT Goa director. Also, admission to NIT Goa has begun. Candidates can visit the official website and check the entrance examinations needed in order to get admission to a course.
“The certificate will help students when seeking admission to higher education institutes after their graduation, or jobs in India and abroad,” he said. Mugeraya added that the programme will also benefit researchers at the NIT, as it will offer them different perspectives from the undergraduate students regarding the subject of research.
