The Union Ministry of Human Resource Department (MHRD) has released the NIRF Rankings of the year 2020 for universities and colleges across the Indian subcontinent.
Usually, NIRF Rankings are announced by the month of April everywhere. However, this year, it has been considerably delayed, in view of the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdown across the nation.
NIRF Rankings 2020: Key Highlights
The NIRF Ranking 2020 saw participation from 38,000 institutes, witnessing 20% more entries than the previous year.
- Institutes were ranked in 10 different categories: Management, Engineering, Architecture, Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Law, Overall, Universities and College.
- Overall Rankings saw IIT Madras top the list followed by IISc Bangalore and IIT Delhi.
- As known, IIM A, B and C notched at the top 3 positions in the Management category, respectively.
- IIT Madras is having a great time, bagging the topmost positions in both Engineering and Overall category.
- IISc Bangalore bagged the top rank in the University category whereas Miranda House in the College Category.
- Jamia Hamdard Institute topped the Pharmacy discipline, AIIMS for medicine and National Law School of India University in Law and IIT Kharagpur for its architecture discipline.
- Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Science, Manipal College of Dental Science, Dr DY Patil Vidyapith Pune made it to the top 3 positions in the dental college category.
Meanwhile, the HRD Minister also reminded that India has 45,000 degree colleges with 1500 top ranking institutions and more than 1000 universities.
On this line, he urged the UGC Chairman to ensure that the following years find participation from all the Indian higher education institutions for NIRF rankings.

NIRF considers listing top educational institutions of India based on the categories of Overall, University, Management, Engineering, Pharmacy, Architecture and Law.
This year, for the first time, even dental colleges have been ranked.
MHRD lays down predefined parameters namely, Research and Professional Practices (RP), Teaching and Learning Resources (TLR), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Peer Perception, Outreach and Inclusivity (IO) to rank institutions and universities.

Achievement of HRD Ministry
HRD Minister Pokhriyal asserted that the National Test Abhyas app for NEET and JEE aspirants have been benefiting through it.
At least 6.5 lakh users have downloaded it so far and within half an hour prior to the live program, 8000 users had installed the app.
