New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has now granted permission for 150 MBBS seats at Chandulal Chandrakar Medical College, Durg, following the revocation of recognition and the Medical Counselling Committee's (MCC) decision to withdraw seats from the NEET UG Counselling.
Confirming this, the Health Minister of Chhattisgarh, T S Singhdeo tweeted that he's delighted to announce to the people of the state that Chandulal Chandrakar Medical College, Durg has got permission from National Institute of Medical Sciences for 150 seats.
He also mentioned that the establishment of this medical college in the state will be beneficial for all medical aspirants.
The latest reports suggest that the medical college has been given the go-ahead by NMC, the top regulatory agency for medical education for the academic year 2022–2023. One academic year and only one group of students will be able to take advantage of the 150 MBBS seats that have been approved.
The NMC's approval came at a time when there was a lot of uncertainty about Chandulal Medical College's standing for medical admission.
Recently, the latest reports revealed that MCC has informed about the withdrawal of 22 MBBS seats from the NEET Counselling 2022 by sending a notice. These seats were from the NMC-declared ineligible Chandulal Chandrakar Memorial Government Medical College in Durg.
The MCC's notice states that the following Institute has been removed from the UG Counseling 2022, as the college's recognition has been revoked by NMC, it is hereby announced to all candidates.
The National Medical Commission has now given the medical college permission to add 150 MBBS seats, despite MCC's decision to withdraw the seats.
As per the latest reports, the permission for these seats will only be valid for the academic year 2022–2023; the college will have to request permission from the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC in order to admit the following group of students. If there is a violation, the NMC Act and regulations will be followed strictly, and the college will be punished.
The acquisition of CCM medical college, which was suffering from severe financial losses, was the subject of intense controversy because of claims made by the opposition parties, including BJP members, that it was intended to favour those connected to the institution and its management, which included members of a family to which Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel's daughter is married.
The former Medical Council of India (MCI) designated CCM Medical College as having a "zero year" and 150 MBBS seats available each year.
The medical council's team inspected the medical colleges' facilities and discovered serious deficiencies, so the institute was unable to receive the MCI approval for 2019–20.
The students approached various governmental authorities seeking transfer to other medical colleges in an effort to save their career prospects as they faced an uncertain future due to ongoing serious deficiencies at their medical college that caused it to lose MCI recognition.
On the basis of the medical college's de-recognition and the MCI report, they subsequently filed a petition with the HC, and the High Court ordered the state government to form a committee and develop a plan for transferring the MBBS students who were unhappy with their placement into other medical colleges.
Later, the management had complained about how difficult it was to run the college and asked the government to take over.
Accordingly, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel had made an announcement confirming that the medical college acquisition process would start soon, and gradually the process of acquisition was also started.
The opposition, however, did not support this decision because they claimed the project was linked to nepotism and was an attempt to favour the daughter of the Chief Minister's in-laws.
The Chhattisgarh Chandulal Chandrakar Memorial Medical College, Durg (Acquisition) Bill, 2021 was finally passed after much discussion last year, and the NMC has now approved the medical college's request for 150 MBBS seats.
