NEET PG Postponement (Cancelled)- SC Rejects Plea, Exam to be Held on May 21

New Delhi: Supreme Court has dismissed pleas to postpone the NEET PG 2022 Exam as it will create 'Uncertainty, Chaos' for over 2 lakh students who are preparing for the exam. The exam will now be held as per schedule, i.e, on May 21, 2022.

Informing about the decisions, the bench stated that there are two categories of students, one is requesting for postponement of the NEET PG 2022 exam, and the second category who are preparing for the exam and will be affected by the postponement.

The supreme court said, “As the country gets back on the rails, which was derailed due to the pandemic, the time schedule laid down by this court must be adhered to”.

“Any delay in conducting the exam will result in fewer resident doctors. This year only 2 sets of doctors are there. The request cannot be entertained due to the reason that it would have an effect on the patient care and the career of the doctors" the bench further added.

NEET PG 2022 Exam Clashes with NEET PG 2021 Counselling

The bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant was considering the petitions of students and doctors seeking to postpone the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET-PG) 2022 due to a clash with ongoing NEET PG 2021 counselling.

Students who have registered for NEET PG Exam 2022 have been demanding for postponement of examinations on various social media platforms, citing the clash between NEET PG Exam 2022 Dates and NEET PG 2021 Counselling Schedule.

Doctors and student associations have also submitted their requests to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has requested the Supreme Court of India to postpone the NEET PG 2022 exam by 10 weeks.

Earlier, the first round of NEET PG 2021 Counselling was held from January 12 to January 14, 2022, while the second round was conducted from January 15 to February 12, 2022. The dates for counselling were later extended to February 18, 2022, by the commission.

NEET PG 2021 Counselling mop up/stray was held till May 07, 2022. In addition, many states have also conducted the NEET PG 2021 counselling till May 12, 2022.

Due to this delay in NEET PG 2021 Counselling, the NEET PG 2022 Exam which was earlier scheduled for March 12, 2022, was postponed to May 21, 2022. The NEET PG 2022 Result for the same is now expected to be released on June 20, 2022.

NEET PG 2022 Exam to be held as per Schedule

Earlier, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare deliberated whether to postpone the NEET PG Exam 2022. After much thought on this issue, the final decision was taken on May 10, 2022, for conducting the exam as per the schedule.

Referring to the decision, SG Aishwarya Bhati said, “There are a large number of students who want the exam on May 21. 2 lakh 6000 doctors have registered. What we are seeking to espouse is the rights of these doctors”.

“Delay may have a cascading effect on other years, other courses, SS courses, and also patient care”. Adding to the statement, ASG Bhati submitted that any delay in NEET PG Exam 2022 will have a "cascading effect" on the future admission process.

There should be three PGS batches available in hospitals, but due to the delay, there will be only two batches available in the hospitals. She further submitted that it is necessary to follow the exam schedule which was earlier disrupted due to the COVID19 pandemic restriction.

With the final decision announced today, on May 13, 2022, the process is now finally wrapped up with the final decision of conducting the NEET PG 2022 on May 21, 2022. However, students are worried as they are not able to get a study break after the counselling process.
