New Delhi: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) PG hearing against the 10% reservation for the EWS category will be resumed by the Supreme Court on August 2, 2022. To avail of the quota, the reservation has stated INR 8 lakh for the eligibility criteria.
Last year, the NEET PG aspirants filed petitions as a plea for EWS reservation in the All India Quota (AIQ) in the NEET PG counselling. According to the petitioners, admissions taking in regard to the EWS quota will be a disadvantage for meritorious students.
The Supreme Court has asked the government to explain the petition. The government had set up a three-member panel where they had put forth that candidates who have taken admission availing the EWS criteria were from a family background of income of INR 5 lakh. This information was collected from UPSC and JEE exams.
According to the panel, defining the EWS category in terms of family income is a “feasible criterion”. Presently, defining the EWS category is reasonable on the threshold of INR 8 lakh family income annually.
In the affidavit which was filed last year related to admission for NEET PG, the panel has recommended that “only those families whose annual income is up to Rs 8 lakh would be eligible to get the benefit of the EWS reservation.”
The petitioners have also claimed that no research was done to make INR 8 lakh income criteria for the EWS reservation. Since last year, the NEET PG quota decision has been pending. The aspirants were left waiting for the NEET PG counselling process stating it was a “national interest” by SC. They held protests and the matter will now be heard again on August 2, 2022.
