Undergraduate medical and dental candidates in Maharashtra, with their parents, have asked the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) and state common entrance test (CET) cells to give clarity for the 2020-21 academic year for the medical admission procedure.
On November 2, 2020, students and parents sent separate emails to both authorities, demanding that the admission procedure, information brochure, and seat matrix be released without any further delay for the upcoming academic year.
Sudha Shenoy, parent and activist stated, “The center’s Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) recently clarified that the admissions process for UG medical and dental seats should begin across states on November 6 and if the state has to follow this, students need to be made aware of basic details including the schedule.”

She further informed that anxiety and stress levels among students are very high since the announcement of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) results. It has been two weeks and no information regarding the admissions have been released by the authorities yet.
The letter written by parents and medical aspirants also mentioned the importance of commencement of state admissions process needs by November 6, 2020, as suggested by the center, so that students who got a seat in the all India quota (AIQ) are not deprived of state quota seats as well.
Archit Kumar, a medical aspirant, stated, “Many students opt for admissions in an institute outside Maharashtra in the AIQ round and later withdraw admissions as per the provision and confirm seat in a state Institute of their liking. This year the AIQ admissions are already underway, but there’s no information yet on the start of the state admissions process.”

In September this year, the state government has decided to remove the 70:30 regional quota in medical admission that reserved 70% seats for those from the region. However, a student from Vidarbha raised objections regarding this decision of the government. The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has put a hold for medical admissions until November 10, 2020.
Sudha Shenoy added, “Admissions could begin post-November 10, but the pre admission process of registration and document verification is a long process, so the state needs to start the process for the time being. This will help calm nerves of lakhs of medical and dental aspirants.”
Moreover, the state CET cell is yet to provide any information related to the admissions process. Parents are also planning to reach the Bombay HC if the state doesn’t commence the admission process by November 6, 2020.
